add Versioning to your Projects

  • 1.  add Versioning to your Projects

If this is a repeated post, apologies. I thought I posted it here before, but I think it was just our internal wiki.

I thought I'd post this to the forum as a simple method to ensure proper testing and updating. I am pretty sure when I started this job and the major reason my updates didn't work is the changes weren't loaded to the production boxes. This caused a lot of stress because I couldn't understand why things worked on the designer box but not the production box. Since the 'version scene' has been implemented, everything has been much smoother sailing.

Add a version scene to your projects if you are using a Project server.

    From our internal wiki:

Version screens/scenes are necessary for testing projects once they are edited.

The version number is based on date and time. The version scene is usually the last scene in a project.

Open up the scene then open up visual logic.

      1. You will see it is disconnected
      2. Connect it
      3. Disconnect it

You must disconnect because otherwise the version will continually update. It needs to be a snapshot before you save and publish.

Save and publish the product. Find the scene on this wiki page for the project and update the version number.

    Why a version scene?

The Xpression production boxes do not necessarily update after a new version of a project is updated. Sub-control needs to refresh the boxes otherwise you are not testing the changes.

Now you need to load the version screen and see if it displays correctly. iNews is NOT a reliable display of the version because it WILL show the most current version while the productions do not.

If you get a display of the wrong version, halt testing until the boxes are refreshed.

If the boxes do not refresh, go back to the designer box, open the projects and confirm the version scene was updated.

View the version screen going to video from the production box! Preview is not good enough! End to end testing!

Posted this because last night had a news director that didn't understand how to use tell if they updated the Xpression projects nor how to use the MOS plugin. 2 hours on the road for 10 minutes of training. I don't want any of you to have to go though this.
