Hello all, I am having a slight problem with a mask dissolving out...   (XP v10.7 build 5640 beta)

Currently I have a L3 with an animated bar (prores 4444). I needed to make the bar shorter so I used a mask. When I animate on screen everything seems to work fine.  Though, when doing a simple alpha dissolve out animation on the timeline you can see the outline of the long bar (under the mask) as everything dissolves out (almost as if the mask was dissolving out faster than the long bar).

I played around with layer priorities and couldn't figure out why it's doing that.

I'm just curious as to why this may be happening? I've attached some images of what's going on.

    Thanks

Guessing you're keyframing the alpha of the group of items that contains the masked mov and possibly text etc…?

What happens is the mask is also affected by that group alpha and at less than 100% opacity/alpha lets some of that mov bleed through.

So the simplest solution may be to keyframe the mov, and also explicitely keyframe all the other bits such as text objects that need to fade out as well but leaving the mask and the group at 100%.  For simplicity maybe leave the group keyframes in but both at 100, gives you an easy time reference to align the others that will do the actual fade out.

You could also animate out the Alpha of a Layer Object that includes the mask. This will behave differently than animating the alpha of the Group Object since the entire composition of the Layer Object will be effected, not each item individually as Paul noted.

Thank you all.  Actually, Jeff's suggestion of switching my dissolve to the LayerObject solved my issue.  But thanks for the insights.

    Cheers

If you are doing animated opacity on the group, the group does not turn transparent. Instead, the opacity becomes inherited in the child objects. Hence, a mask at 50% only masks an items at 50% while that objects opacity is also at 50% now.

I've posted about this too. You other option is to make the scene and map it to a quad by making a material using a "RenderView" shader.

You can make a second camera in the scene off to the side and map it onto a quad. Then animate the quad's opacity. That's the only way to get around this odd bug.
