How do you create an inverted alpha mask or can you use a slab to mask out the material?

To use a slab to mask out another object like a quad you can do this;

Layer object

Slab with corners for example, render all channels, be sure to put a material on your slab, I have used black here. 

On the quad to the alpha channel off.

If I put it in a group it wants to disappear. Do you know why that's happening? Is there a way to fix that ?

If you are using an image as a mask then you can invert in the mask image.
