  • 1.  Audio crackling on clip playback

    Hello,

We are experiencing a crackling noise when playing back a clip within the xpression system.

We exported a clip from FCP as an mov file and then put it thru the xpression video coder, which creates an avi file. I have read that adobe can create a native file that the xpression can play out directly without going thru video coder but we do not have adobe premeire as of now.

We were also interested in how to control audio channels within the xpression if possible.

Assuming you are running in 1080i29.97:

Are the clips you are exporting from FCP in exactly 29.97 frames per second (59.94 fields per second)? If you export a clip as 30 frames or 60 fields it will crackle/pop on the XPression output.

You also need to make sure that if you are using the XPression Video Coder that it is transcoding your video files into the correct frame rate as well.

If you are running FCP on a Windows PC you should be able to export directly to the XPression codec.

For controlling audio channels in XPression you can configure the AES channels mapping in the video material.

Thanks for the reply Garner. Actually we are operating in SD mode, exporting out a 720 x 480 sized clip and running FCP on a mac computer. Our trainer Rob was here last week and was assisting us in the process but we couldnt solve the audio issue?

SD is still 29.97 frames a second. So you still need to confirm that you are exporting your video and audio at exactly 29.97 frames per second and not 30 frames per second.

Are you monitoring your audio on embedded, AES or a preview audio device?

We've been exporting the video with the animation codec, 29.97 fps, and the audio at 16 bit, 48khz, with the channel grouped configuration. Then we take that into video encoder, render, then when we open that in xpressions as a background through the material manager it won't play at all in the sequence when you hit the take. In one of the xpressions it showed up as a transparent black background and in our 2nd seat xpression it only shows the first frame and would not play.

If the videos are not playing when are you hearing the audio cracking?

Have you enabled auto-start and free running on your video materials?

    OR

Have you put your video materials into the scene director?

No this is a new problem we encountered, last week we could get the videos to play and with the crackle with the audio.

As far as the other 2 I'll have to double check...do you see anything wrong with the settings Im exporting from fcp?

Yes, your export settings look fine.

You also need to make sure that when you transcode using the XPression Video Coder that you have the right frame rate and audio settings configured.
