  • 1.  Accessing the contents of a Scene Group from Sequence Interface

While I wait for Tech Support to call me back I figured I would reach out to you great people.

It is possible to see the published text of a Scene Group using the Take Inspector > Template Data at the bottom of the Sequence Interface?

I am building a project for our entry level TV Class which needs to be very easy to operate. I want them to do everything from the Sequence Interface so I made generic titles, lower thirds, etc and they will update the text using the Take Inspector > Template Data window at the bottom of the Sequence Interface. The last item is a Scene Group for scrolling credits which contains 5 scenes. Each scenes has text that is "published" so it can be edited. However, when I click on the scene group in the sequence, the Take Inspector > Template Data window is blank. How do I easily edit the text of the scene group without going into layout interface?

Off the top of my head, I don't think you can. You would need to datalinq those scene group children scenes I think to pull the data from something like a text file (or use layout mode)

One other approach you might want to experiment with instead of using a scene group, is to use a Sequencer Group. Create a sequencer group in the sequencer and drag a few scenes in it, then you can set the sequence group to "Roll" mode. It will roll all of the sequencer take items you've put in that sequence group. You can still adjust the properties of the roll, such as the margins between each page etc, using the properties of the sequencer group. This method will definitely allow you to use the template data to edit the text of the credits, and it is very easy to add/subtract pages from the roll, simply by adding or deleting the take items from that sequence group. Hope this helps and makes sense..

    Thanks Brian,

I did consider a datalinq solution but pulling content from external sources is more advanced than I want to show them in the first few weeks of their college career. This needs to be as intuitive and dummy proof as possible. (Don't worry, I will show them all of Xpression's advanced features during their CG training but that doesn't happen till week 8).

The Sequence Group is an interesting idea. While it solves the text editing issue, it brings up some more complications for triggering the credits. I am worried the Students will accidentally trigger the first individual graphic instead of the group. There is also a technical hurttle at the end of Scene Groups. Once the Scene Group is finished, it stays "Active" and will not roll again until you manually take it offline. I can see that causing a lot of headaches.

Is there a way to use Datalinq or visual logic to pull text from another scene? My thinking is I can create all the text fields in the parent scene of the scene group but keep the text invisible. This way the fields would show up in the Take Inspector > Template Date. Then I would program all the individual child scenes in the group to point to the correct block of text from the parent. I know this is a lot of work for me, but it would keep thing simple for the students which is my goal.

Dgoedhart that is a smart workaround. I thought of this myself too and will try this some day when I got time to test it.

I tried it: cross-scene data sharing is not possible with Visual Logic as far as I can tell.

    Hi Gvane,

No update to report on my end. I was waiting till version 7.0 came out to test it. Unfortunately, while we were waiting for 7.0 our support contract expired so I am still on hold waiting for the contract renewal go get processed.
