Malcolm, I threw it low and outside hoping someone would take a swing and knock my Ferris Bueller set-up outta the park and you nailed . Gratitude! ;-)
I've been out of the office a few days and haven't had a chance to check back here until now and as I've thought about it over that time I think I was prolly approaching this wrong and part of that has to do with my minimal experience coming into this particular role and my trying to appease my producer who may be a bit... I think overtaxed could be a good, maybe even kind word to use here.
Frequently, I found myself in an undesirable situation where my producer would ask me to change the numbers to certain graphics minutes/seconds before a show. This was because the ROS was almost never fully complete and a reoccurring level of miscommunication hampered progress. Additionally, I'd be told to change framebuffers on several graphics during the shows.
Worse still, the ROS wasn't always updated. Then when the producer or director called for the number of a particular graphic, I'd have to check and verify the graphic, the framebuffer and whether that particular buffer was live or not since there was a probability that I might accidentally step on a live graphic. Using a color legend to quickly distinguish graphics was something I made part of that process because I didn't know what else to do. It was only fractions of seconds lost, but it was taking too much time and I was getting called out for it.
I finally got the producer to agree to let me build the graphical ROS myself and as result - fewer last minute number changes, fewer
'LIVE' buffer changes and I am finally regaining confidence in Fast Recall. So now I'm starting to see my dependence on the colors was not necessary. I'm much happier about that.
