  • 1.  changing scale of a quad based upon the number of characters typed in a text field.

We us "tombstones" on screen as an NBA player is isolated on camera during warmups. He is framed screen right and the tombstone animates in from the left with a factoid. I want to be able to change the size of the tombstone based on the amount of text. Can I tie the y scale parameter to the number of characters or lines typed in the text field so that the quad holding the background image will fit the text rather than have alot of black space?

Yes you can. You need to move the quad you're changing the size of so that it is a child of the text (drag it on top of the text object), then under "Tabs & Options," assign the auto-scale to children.

There's a great tutorial on XPression-U about text objects found right here, and it starts talking about auto-scale around 8 mintues in.

Excellent Dan, thank you very much. I have been watching some of the tutorials but obviously not this one. Thanks again.

OK, Now I want to take this one step further. The quad that is the BG scales automatically. The producer now wants the entire graphic to be "bottom justified" based on the size of the text box so that it rests on bottom safe title. I was thinking of making a new group that contains everything, but then I can't make that group a child of just the text layer. Anyone have any ideas?

Unfortunately I have no machine in front of me, but I would try changing the pivot point to the bottom of your quad. Check the size of your quad first, then put the 'y' pivot to (-half height). I'm 90% sure this will get you the results you're looking for, just not sure if it will interfere with keyframes and such. Worth a shot though? Just don't save, and revert project if things go sideways : )
