I had yet another question for the forum. Lately we've been converting a few assets for some new sequence templates. That being said, the encoding process from our MOVs to the XPression compatible AVIs has proved slightly daunting. Whenever we are bringing in our assets in need of conversion there is no preview in Video Coder and after converting the no-preview asset it is simply a black frame with the length of the export. I thought initially it was because of how the assets may have been exported out of After Effects, however, I've never had a conversion issue from my laptop running Video Coder. Unfortunately it is only on the actual ROSS XPression machine. Any insight on this will help immeasurably.

The XPression machine probably doesn't have the codec to read the MOV you are using; but your laptop probably does. Does the XPression machine have Quicktime installed, and can it playback the MOV you are trying to convert? If it can't, that is the issue (install quicktime or quicktime pro). If you can play it back from Quicktime on the XPression machine then something more strange is going on.

Yes, indeed it does have Quicktime installed and the export(s) are using Apple Pro Res 422/4444. I have not tested playing it back within Quicktime on the actual XPression machine yet though. I will do that and report back ASAP. Thanks again!

It does not playback within Quicktime on the XPression machine. At this point I assume I am missing the codec to watch Pro Res on Quicktime. Fortunately, I believe I've found the codec for windows, however I'm reluctant to install it on the XPression machine for fear or compromising it. Would I be safe in installing this on the actual XPression machine?

There shouldn't be any problem with installing an additional quicktime codec.

If you are rendering files from AfterEffects on-site, you might save time by rendering them as Xpression codec .AVIs instead.

We would love to do that but our current workflow is primarily Apple Mac so we're not able to get that codec on our edit machines. I hope to try and install this codec on our ROSS machines and report back on here with whatever I find.
