  • 1.  Alpha applied to materials

I have a scene with a material where I have applied an alpha to it by going to my material manager> right clicking on that material> edit> then I added a new shader to the layer (added a video).

it works great for that material but if I bring that scene into my sequence player and replace the image, then my material no longer has the alpha applied to it.. I have looked into groups but was unsuccessful. So if anyone can point me in the right direction either in here or in the manual, I would appreciate it.

If you change the image through the sequencer then it isn't actually changing the image assigned to the Material (because you don't want other objects which are using that material to change as well; you only want the object you are changing from the sequencer to change).. So an image set through the sequencer uses its own material which would not have your alpha setting applied to it. In this case, could you just set the alpha value onto the object?

And how would I go about doing that?

Trenton, could you specify a bit more on what you are trying to accomplish?

Are you using a video to create a moving mask or do you just want to add some transparency to your images?

    Best regards,

    Hi Trenton,

Thanks for the video, now I know what you mean.

Appearently the alpha that you used inside of your material doesn't work when you publish the material. I didn't know that either.

However, to solve your problem I would go about and try to put the alpha inside of your scene and not inside of your material.

In your scene you have a Quad called picture which is published so you can change the source in the sequencer, which is perfect.

What I would do is change the Z-POS of that quad to 0.

Then create a new quad and also a new material but define it as a mask. As the source for that mask you use the video which you have used originally in your material itself.

Put the Z-POS for that mask at 1

Finally, position the quad which has the OTS on Z-POS 2. That way the mask only hides the picture and not the OTS itself.

If you want you can also put the material on your timeline if you just want to play back through your timeline instead of using the autostart. This also ensures the sync'ed playback of your animation and the alpha.

If it's not clear, let me know and I'll make a demo for you.

    Good luck and merry Christmas!

    Kenneth,

Thank you for your idea and layering did help the only thing is that i believe was wrong was that the video i was using for the mask would not mask out so here is what i did..

In the material editor i went to the video option in the left hand side then in the alpha blending drop down changed the blend mode to subtract with a mix of 100% and changed the current and previous stage modifiers to Bias. and now my problem is fixed..

    Thank you

    Trenton
