I installed quicktime and can now bring in .mov files as new materials, but when I add the video material to a new quad object, I can't find any way to preview the video or get the video to play. I am using Xpression designer version 2.60. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

First off, I highly recommend using the XPression Video Coder to transcode your quicktime files to a native XPression codec. They will play much better.

To get the video to play there are a couple different approaches (depending on the end goal). If the video is a looping background, then normally in the material you would click Free Running and Auto Start. This will start the video playing whenever the scene is taken on air.

Otherwise, If the video is more for an effect, like the in/out animation for a lower third; you can drag the material onto a track on the scene director. Then when you put the scene on air and play the scene director (usually from the Sequencer) then the video will play in sync with any other animations you have in the scene director.

Nate; here is a quick video showing the 2nd method described above:

(downloading the file rather than viewing it in the embedded viewer provides a MUCH higher quality video)

Brian, thank you very much for the information. The problem seems to be more elemental than playback options. I tried the free run/auto start but it will not play when taken on air. I noticed that in the material properties window, I get "none" in the RGB and alpha preview (are these preview areas?) areas. Should I be seeing something in these spots if all is well? I can play back the movie with motion fine in Quicktime player. Is it possible that our switcher won't support motion graphics or won't trigger videos out of xpression? It does bring in the first frame of the video fine but it behaves as a still image. Thanks again.

Nate, it is probably best if you contact Ross tech support and you can send them your project for assistance.

Are you connecting XPression Designer to your Ross switcher (carbonite/crossover) using the RossLinq output?

If so, that only supports still images and not motion.

Nate has contacted Ross Tech Support and we have sorted out the capabilties and limitations of the Rosslinq connection between his XPression Designer and CrossOver switcher.

Brian, thanks for all your help. I followed your advice and Garner Millward at Ross was very helpful. He determined that our setup is not animation/video capable. Our product was purchased before I started working here and I had incorrectly assumed that we could do video. I appreciate your willingness to assist a new forum member.

Would it be possible to render the output and play the animation in the CrossOver? But that, I suppose, means sacrificing another keyer for the 'live' data.

You can add an animation to the sequencer then right click on it and select export to images or video. Then play back via another device.
