    Hi all,

We run on an Adobe CC workflow off of OS X and do not have access to the XPression codec on our edit machines. That being said we were just wondering, if anyone has found any success with a similar workflow, in regards to the best codec. "Uncompressed" has proved the best option, however, the files are quite large after export. Has anyone found a better codec option within XPression's sequence view that works well with Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro?

    Thanks everyone.

Exporting using Quicktime Animation Codec (sometimes called Apple Animation Codec or also called RLE) would give you a smaller file size.. It is also lossless compression so there would be no degredation in quality. You would still need to run it through the XPression Video Coder to convert it to an XPression .AVI for realtime playback.

If you can export as MJPEG that would work quite well too. (If you don't need an alpha channel)

I apologize for the confusion I caused, I meant to ask what is a codec for exports out of XPression that work best in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects besides the "Uncompressed" AVI.

If you are running 5.7, then probably exporting as a PNG sequence would be the best (but it doesn't support Audio).

If you are running 5.9 or higher, then the possibility to export to MOV using quicktime is a new feature, and so the answer would be Quicktime Animation Codec..

Along similar lines, I want to use Adobe Media Encoder instead of XPression Video Coder for transcoding video clips (without alphas). This way the editing team can deliver a usable file instead of bogging down the XPression with transcoding. Is this possible? Does anyone have an Adobe Media Encoder preset?

    David,

I have used it before -- must be on Windows though and also have the XPression Codec Installed on that machine.

I don't have a preset as this was setup at a customer site.

I am actually trying to export a scene as MOV but I am unable to do this. When I select MOV from the dropdown I get a popup warning: "The codec did not accept the current encoding settings". Also, I do not have any codec settings when I try to open that dropdown with MOV selected. I am able to export to AVI without issue, but MOV would be preferred.

I do need to export scenes with alpha. Any ideas?
    Thanks for you help. .

    Regards,
    Mike

If you need to export scenes with Alpha, I suggest using the MOV wrapper with the Animation codec.

    Hello,

This is what I am trying to do. From the export window when I select MOV it does not allow me to select any codec details and therefore the Export button remains greyed out.
Is this a codec issue on the machine, perhaps? I was not able to get past this and am still unable to export any type of MOV.
    We are using v6.1.

    Thanks again.

I see. Can you post a screenshot on here? Of exactly what you're seeing. I'm still convinced your parameters just might be slightly off. I know the codec pane for exports on XPression since 6.0 has been a little finicky.

Here is a screen grab of the section. I have selected MOV as the file format. But when I try to select a codec it does not show me a dropdown list of options and codec settings is greyed out.
If I click Export I get an error that says "The codec did not accept the current encoding settings."

I am able to export AVI, but ideally I would export MOV with alpha.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Mike,
    The image didn't show up.
Just to confirm, you are talking about Adobe After Effects/Adobe Encoder on a Mac system? If its on a Windows system, do you have Quicktime installed?
If you are having issues getting AE on a Mac to export to MOV/PC you would probably find a solution on the Creative Cow or Adobe forums.

Thanks Garner. Turns out our production machines did not have quicktime installed. Thanks for all of your suggestions.
Cant believe I didn't check on that earlier.
    Thanks all!
