Is there a way in Xpression to get this same gradient look on the text? I'm sure there is but I have not been able to figure it out. Can you help? We want the title text to be able to look exactly like this.

    Thank you

    Hi Jen,

We can't see the picture that you tried to add, but if you want to assign a gradient to a textobject then you first have to create a material that holds the gradient.

Then, select all of the text in the textfield and then apply the gradientmaterial to it by double-clicking on it.

    Good luck,

    Kenneth

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP. i GOT THE GRADIENT ON, MY ONLY PROBLEM IS THERE IS A CLEAR COLOR DIFFERENCE RIGHT THRU THE MIDDLE. SO TAKE A THE WORD "TEXT" THE TOP HALF IS A PALE BLUE AND THE BOTTOM HALF IS DARK BLUE. IT LOOKS LIKE A CLEAR LINE SEPERATING THE TWO INSTEAD OF A SOFT GRADIENT BLENDING BETWEEN THE 2 COLORS. IT IS MORE LIKE THE UPPER HALF IS ONE COLOR AND IT DROPS RIGHT TO ANOTHER COLOR HALFWAY THRU THE TEXT. HOW CAN I ACHIEVE THIS EFFECT. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN EMAIL YOU THE PIC SO YOU CAN SEE WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT?

    Hi Jen,

I don't really know what's causing this. I've just tried it here and it works fine with me.

Also, a small update on the answer I provided earlier. If you edit your scenefont, you can also add a gradient directly to that scenefont. So go to the material where you normally select the color of the text and add a new layer there and choose the Gradient. So you don't have to apply a separate material to it.

Actually applying a separate material was the way I did it before the Gradient existed inside XPression.

If you want you can send me the picture on kenneth@boldgraphics.be

    Cheers,

    Kenneth

For the sake of other people struggling with the same issue I'll post the same solution I sent to Jen through e-mail here as well:

I'm afraid there is no "native" solution in XPression for what you're trying to do.

It's true that in XPression you can only create soft blended gradients. But it doesn't mean you can't use hard edged gradients :-)

In this case you'll have to create the gradient you want to use, in Photoshop and you'll have to import it as a material inside XPression.

Next you'll have to select the text and then double-click on the gradientmaterial you imported to apply that material to that text.

    That should solve your problem.

There are however a few remarks when you want to use this workaround:

First, the material will be applied to each letter of the word individually. So if you're trying to create a gradient which is slighly tilted across an entire word, you're in trouble.

Second, I've noticed that if you're filling in the text dynamically through software or datalinq the material is not always assigned automatically.

However, in your case the gradient is a straight line so it shouldn't cause you too much trouble.

    I hope this helps!

    Best regards,

    Kenneth
