Where can I find specs for importing 3D models.

I looked in the help, with no luck.

I'm trying to import a 3D model and get the error message 'Unsupported 3DS file version'.

I'd like to give my graphics designer some guidelines.

    Thanks,

    Spencer

The format we are looking for is .3ds indeed. Tell me, were you attempting to bring this in from something like Zaxwerks? They use a very old format of .3ds that is incompatible.

Where did you build the model or find it?

    JB:

Thanks - yes, that's exactly it - the model is being exported from Zaxwerks.

Do you know the oldest version of a .3ds model that might work?

Or any conversion tools that might help?

I really only need the one model (our logo), so I don't want to buy 3DSM for just one thing.

    Thanks again,

I'm not sure (because the models dont tell us AFAIK), how to tell the date of a particular type of model without resorting to applications that could be costly.

My best suggestion is to perhaps download blender

    www.blender.org

it's a free open source 3d model generator, quite capable of making anything you want and exporting in .3ds. I believe it's possible to import the Zax model and then save and export from Blender. It's been a while since I did it and eventually found blender to be a more powerful (if less easy to use, but hey, its free) model generator. You can always find tutorials on youtube and at cgtalk.com to help you learn new software.

Maybe someone here could help you as well. I do not have the ability currently, but the community is full of helpful people.

Best of luck! Keep us posted!

Blender worked very well for my purposes.

I just imported the model and exported it.

The exported version opened in XPression without problems.
