  • 1.  SNAPCHAT on Xpression

It was only a matter of time. Someone has come up with the idea of doing Snapchat sort of cartoon overlays over a live camera and they are looking to Xpression. I know Xpression doesn't take live video, I know there is no facial recognition software, I know it is practically impossible. But so were a lot of the things we did last season. Has anyone tried, or know of software that might pull it off?

    Thanks

We have started to do some things with snapchat, although nothing with cartoon overlays (filters is the industry term).

Snapchat *does* take live video. Create a quad and a new material, and select 'Live Source' from the layer options.

We then insert the graphics we create for snapchat content.

There are also programs to rotate your live source, so you could run this through your switcher, eliminating XPression from having to handle a live input.

So that workflow would be: shoot in 1920x1080, create gfx in 1920x1080, but rotate everything 270 or -90 degrees. It helped me to have a rotated monitor when we did this.

Then shoot your footage and rotate the footage in post or through the software. Sorry I can't recall the name. Maybe movie recorder?

The real problem would be tracking the face in the live feed so that the overlay (If the industry is calling them 'filters' it is doing so incorrectly) stays correctly positioned on the subject's face.

When I was working with VisRT over at Reality Check, we did some cool stuff with NCam which fed live tracking data our programmers were able to tap into so 3d graphics could appear to 'sit' on the soccer pitch (for example) and feel correct in the environment via this realtime-tracking. We also used it to track overlay statistical graphics in a boxing match I see no reason why this couldn't also be done in XPression, but you'll need to have a couple of good programmers and an R&D budget.

Mia, the big issue is this wants to take place totally live during a time out. A live camera feed with filters applied. Willie I agree, the tracking is the main issue as far as live goes. I wanted to ask so that I can tell our mascot (Jazz Bear) that we don't make enough money to be able to do that.

They are calling them filters because they originated from more basic filters from the launch of snapchat. ex: B&W, highly saturated colors, now all the way to animal overlays and custom filters.

No, I get it, the industry has a long history of misappropriating terminologies. I bristle every time someone refers to a Lower 3rd as a 'Chyron'
