This is one of those things that bites me from time to time. If you've a stack of objects otherwise setup and dialed in, and then you realize you need a mask so you bring in a layer object put it in your hierarchy in the correct spot, and then grab your groups or objects and make them a child of that layer, the position of those elements will often change. Near as I can tell, the Layer inherits its XYZ from its parent, and then passes the value as absolute to its children as opposed to maintaining a relative relationship. The fact that this happens is only made worse by the fact that there is no undo function to address it when it happens, leaving one to either scramble to recall values, or revert to the last save point, potentially losing considerable work in the process.
