Is there a way to set an anchor point on an object? I would like to animate a quad by scaling it up from the top left corner, but I have not found a solution to achieve this effect.

In Xpression you can use the Pivots points for this. The way I do this... I usually turn on the move tool first so I can see the pivot points. If I have a quad that is 500 pixels in width, I divide it by 2, then enter -250 into the Pivot X field in the Transform tab. Now when you scale, it should scale from this new pivot position.

You can also right-click on an object and use the pivot options to snap the pivot to the edges.
