Ok, so I'm having a really weird issue, and it may be because I have the wrong type of serial cable. I've connected the Allsport CG to the Xpression box, and have fired up Datalinq, and it's saying it's connected to the Allsport, but it's not getting any of the info.

However, the Allsport is showing the score and clock correctly on its LCD panel. So I know the scoreboard is connected to it, it's just not connecting to the Xpression Datalinq.

The question I have is, should I be using a 9-pin dual-female cable? I'm using a 9-pin m/f cable, and that means that the female connection is going to the Xpression as that's the only connector on the box, and the male connector is going to the CONTROL port on the Allsport CG, instead of the port labelled DATA.

Is this cable the problem? And if so, what is Xpression "seeing" that is making the Datalinq think it's correctly connected?

Any and all help is much appreciated. I'm now in the middle of double-header basketball and we're having to hand-drive the scoreboard.

XPression should be connected to the CONTROL port of the All Sport CG. The DATA port is for the All Sport Controller. Sounds like you have it correct.

What COM port do you have set in the Datalinq server? COM 3 is generally the default port for the serial port on the XPression system. You can check that in the device manager.

You can download a guide for the Daktronics-XPression setup here:

I had it in COM1, and that's the thing: last time it just worked. First time I set it up it was a cluster, but then after that it's just worked. I don't use it often enough to have this stuff fail like this, and for me to retain it apparently, although I'm sure I'll have nothing but easy going from here on out.

Anyway, thanks for the link, I'll check it out. Much appreciated!

Make sure you have the right sport selected - Daktronics has a couple of "legacy" protocols - for football and basketball. If I remember correctly you can use HyperTerminal to check that data is coming in as well.

And we use COM4, so it varies by machine. It's also possible that the driver is confused...

It turns out the protocol that comes out of the Allsport CG fools windows into thinking that the Allsport CG is an old Microsoft Ballpoint Serial Mouse. The first time you turn windows on with it connected you'll notice a popup saying "Microsoft Serial Ballpoint detected..Installing driver"; and after that the COM Port will be locked to the mouse driver.

To resolve this issue you can make a modification in the Windows Registry that will disable the serial mouse driver.

In regedit, go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetservicessermouse and change the Start value from "3" to "4". (4 means disabled)

Then you should be able to reboot with the Allsport connected without the serial port being marked as in-use.

ok, so I'm trying this again, and the Allsport CG is connected to the Allsport 5000 and receiving information. The system is connected on COM4 and Datalinq is connected and showing that it's working right, but the fields for the score and clock are still empty. I've done everything in the troubleshooting that's been outlined, including turning the ball mouse driver off, changing the COM ports, checking the settings, and I'm still not seeing the scores. Something else is wrong. Any ideas?

Also, this Xpression is on Windows 7, and I can't find the Hyperterminal application that supposedly comes with the ENPS package, because I have no idea what or where to look for that package. Again, any help is much appreciated.

What do you mean that datalinq is "showing that its working right" ?

If you don't have hyperterminal, you can download an application like Putty (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html) and use it to open the serial port and make sure data is being received.

If the fields are empty in the datalinq, then either there is no data being received on that com port (double check the port numbr and the serial cable), or the data is in the wrong format/sport. Check the Datalinq Server Log Window (under the Windows menu in the datalinq server) for any error messages.
