    Hello all,

I have a somewhat technical question related to the graphics cards.

Last weekend I finished the build of a new XPression rig which is actually an exact copy of an earlier rig I built a few weeks ago.
That rig is based on an ASUS Z270-motherboard, combined with an I7 7700K processor, an AJA Corvid 88 videocard and a GTX 1080 graphics card.

The first one was working beautifully, however the second rig was giving me issues.
It has the exact same components as the first one, except that the graphics card is of a different brand.
So in my first rig i have an PNY GTX1080 and in the second one I have a MSI GTX1080.

When I tested the new rig with XPression, I was having major issues... When loading a project that was running fine on my first rig, on my seocnd rig I was getting a performance load of 500+% where on my original rig it maxed out at 90%.

I started to doublecheck all settings in XPression and everything was exactly the same so I couldn't understand where this difference was coming from. I tried reinstalling XPression, putting an older version on it, reinstalling the graphics drivers etc... Nothing helped.

The only logically explanation I could think of is that the problem must have come from my graphics card which was broken maybe? Or that the MSI-graphics card was incompatible with my ASUS motherboard?
I borrowed a GTX1080 from a buddy of mine which is an ASUS GTX 1080 and I installed 3D Mark to perform some benchmarks. You'll see the screenshots below.
The results were quite shocking to me.

When the benchmarks were finished, it turns out that the MSI scored even better then the ASUS, so clearly the card isn't broken.
When I then compared the two cards in XPression with the exact same project and one scene loaded on only one output, the performance load on the MSI was almost three times bigger than with the ASUS. The MSI was fluctuating heavily around 50% where the ASUS was rocksteady at 21%.

In my opinion all this proves is that XPression is not (or hardly) using the actual gamerendering of the card or at least that what 3D Mark can test but it is using different resources from the card?

Does anybody understands why this is happening? Or is there anybody that can explain a bit more about the usage of the GTX1080 by XPression?

    Thanks,
    "‹Kenneth

I recommend installing the stock NVidia driver from the nvidia website instead of the vendor specific one from MSI.
Also check the NVidia Control Panel to ensure the card is set to "Prefer Maximum Performance". The default is "Adaptive" which can downclock the gpu to very slow speeds when it is not being used heavily.

XPression uses DirectX for all rendering which will do all rendering on the GPU as long as you have the NVidia card chosen as the hardware renderer in the Preferences menu.
