I'm trying to use audio in a graphic element and I'm using a wav file by importing a wav and dragging it to the audio track in the timeline. The audio sounds like loud static. What am I doing wrong? is there a procedure for encoding a wav file using xpression encoder? please help.

    Hi Carlos,

Make sure your WAV-file is 16-bit, stereo and 48KHz.

Maybe mono and 44.1KHz will work as well (I've never tried that), but it definitely has to bit 16-bit otherwise you get static.

The VideoCoder can only be used for video (hence the name I guess), but if you need a simple audio tool use the free Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).

    Good luck!

Audio files on XPression must be Stereo. Mono files will not play correctly.

I would try Gerard's suggestion and let us know if that works for you. If not, maybe provide us the audio file in question.

I am also having a problem with audio. I've imported a wav file that is 16 bit, stereo and 48khz but I don't get any sound at all. Am I doing something wrong here? This is the first time I've tried to use audio in designer so I am not sure of the correct way to implement it. I don't here anything when I play it in the scene director or in the sequencer but on its own in a media player it is fine. Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You have to import your audio file, and put it on your timeline.

Sound will play when scene is online and scenedirector is playing.

Yes, I'm sorry, I have done that already and I still do not get sound from either scene director or the sequencer. Is there somewhere I need to enable audio or something? Thanks for the reply.

Verify with right click on your sound in its track and propriety, that source channel and are well routed to destination channel.

In your hardware configuration, audio tab, can you see your sound device ? Do you try with another file with differents parameters ?

And stupid question: are speakers well connected and switched on ? If yes, i don't understand.

    Hi Michael,

How are you listening to your audio? Are you using the Xpression Designer software or are you using an Xpression Studio? Because if you are using Xpression Studio and you are using the actual output, audio will probably be in AES. So when you connect that to a speaker, it could be that you're getting static.

    Best regards,

    Kenneth

Thanks guys. It seems to be working now. My sound device wasn't configured.

Is there a way to adjust audio levels? I can't seem to find this control.

    Michael,

the only way to adjust audio level is via the scene director. If you expand the audio track you will see a blue line that represents the level, you can assign key frames on that line and adjust the level. There is no audio meter so any adjustments you make will be approximate.

Thanks Andrew. I'm hoping that Xpressions' audio features will be more defined in the next version.

I have a question to add to this discussion. I can hear the audio when playing through the scene director, but when I play it in the sequencer and out to the Virtual output, I don't get any audio output. Does the virtual output offer audio playback? Just trying to use it for some creation offline. I know the Prime unit outputs audio using the BMD card and that works fine on that machine.

Grant, you need to add an audio device for the virtual output to use.

Edit > Hardware Setup > Audio Device > Add

Inputs/Outputs > Virtual Output > Output > Linked Audio Device

How do you configure the ross switcher and/or yamaha audio board to take the sound outputting from xpression?

    Hi Don,

Can you be more specific in what you are trying to do?

    Generally:

    - embedded audio will pass through Ross switchers (unless you are stripping ancillary data or have a frame sync enabled) - there should be little to no configuration required for this

    - Depending on the type of audio console they will work with embedded or AES audio - both of which an XPression Studio engine will output

Can you someone explain the different audio outputs on the xpression. I am trying to connect mine to our audio board via xlr. Would we need to get a deembedder to separate the audio from the sdi/ or is there an analog out of the xpression box that I could use. Thanks

    Isaac,

What type of framebuffer are you using?

    Matrox

    Blackmagic

    AJA

    Bluefish

Hey Garner, We are using a Matrox

If you are using a Matrox card then there is only embedded and AES audio - there is no analog audio out. You will need to either de-embed or convert AES to analog.

Hey Garner, We were able to set up our deembeder for the Sdi out of the Xpression. The problem now is that we are getting like an electrical clicking noise on the audio from the clips. We are currently using audio married to mov clips in Xpression. The audio is set to 16 bit 48k. Is there a different way to import audio or do you have any insight as to what this extra noise is? Thanks

Usually a constant clicking noise is caused by the video clips you are using in XPression not being the same frame rate.

Ex. Video clips are 30fps and XPression is operating in 29.97fps.

You can check your video clip framerate with a software like MediaInfo or by checking your video export settings in the program you are creating the video clip in.

I believe our videos are set to 29.97. The clicking does not seem to happen during the whole video, just during certain parts where the audio seems to be a bit more dynamic. It seems like an electrical pop in the audio. Any other ideas or experiences with this type of issue?

Is this from an ESPN3 package?

Usually clipping that isn't constant on XPression is from the clip being too 'hot' and XPression will clip the audio when it moves out of it's range. Their is no normalization on XPression.

You could try adjusting the audio level on XPression, but it would be best to modify the original clip and lower the audio level.
