Masking question

What I'm trying to do is set up a situation inside the xpression template where you turn one track into a subtractive mask, and then tell the track below it to fill the parameters of that subtractive mask track above it.

So in simple terms, I have a 3 team graphic (3 different logos). I want to take each of those boxes, and turn each of them into a layer that will show through the layer below it, (that being the team logo) but only in the size of that box and only showing 1 of the logos. I want to do the same thing for the remaining 2 boxes but only showing one logo for each.

I want to make the box an alpha channel that only shows what's below it so we can make the full logo it's own track below the box and the track above it will automatically crop it to fit the box.

In the end I want to have a FS with 3 separate boxes and 3 separate logos underneath the boxes and only showing thru to the size of the box. I then want to be able to replace the logos with other logos.

I hope I explained that well enough!

    Thanks!

Are you able to mock something up in Photoshop so we could see visually what you're trying to achieve? I'm having a hard time grasping the idea from just text.

It looks like you just tried to link to a local file. Are you able to upload it to ImageShack or another image hosting site?

I got it now. I'll try and play with the idea this afternoon. I think I know how I would do it, but need to know if it would work first.

Okay, here's I ended up putting it together. Create a Layer Object for each image. If you've got three logos you're working with, create three Layer Objects.

Within each Layer Object, create a quad with your team logo on it, as big as it needs to be.

Now create a new material. I have one that I use called an "Alpha Black," which is my masking object.

Create the objects you need to mask off the object accordingly, and put them in the same layer object. You have now masked off the area you don't need and are keeping the area you do.

Someone probably has a better way of doing this. I've never needed to cut a hole within a scene to reveal something in that same scene. I've only ever needed to reveal it through layers on a framebuffer. There's probably a way to create the material to do the same thing with a single object revealing the inside instead of multiple objects masking the outside.

Dan, Thanks again for all your help with this. I really appreciate it. Im sending an image to show you exactly what I need to have happen. I followed your steps and made a masking material and now it sits on top of my alabama quad. everything inside of the box gets masked out. I need everything outside the box to be masked out. so I end up with the alabama logo inside that masking box not outside. I cant seem to figure out which layer to use to get that to happen. Can you help? I think Im missing a step on getting the alabama background inside the box.

    thanks so much!

Try this sample I just cooked up Jennifer.. It's a bit sloppy, but it should show you the concept of the masking.

For each logo, I created a layer, that contains the logo and two masks used to mask off the two sides of the logo.

Brian's solution is what I was getting at. Don't use that as the "interior" mask, but instead, create objects to mask out the outside. Sorry for not being clearer. Been a busy week and I didn't have that as well as I wanted.
