Hi everyone, I'm a teacher in a French college in Ottawa called La Cit© and we recently bought and XPression Studio with Dual Channel. I have a question regarding rolls and crawls. Can we crop them in anyway without having to do a mask? We used to have an Incriber 3G from Harris and it was very easy to do… Why can't we put a shadow or a border on a logo that you import in the system? That too was very easy with the other system.

    thanks for your help!

Depends a little if you're doing a Scenegroup Roll/Crawl or a Sequencer Group Roll/Crawl but..

Are you logos text objects, image, or models? Either way, you can apply a drop shadow effect to them using the XPression Effects.

Link to images if the embedded pics don't work.

I tried cropping the scene in Designer but I can't see the results in a virtual monitor. I can see guide lines appearing but nothing at the output. I tried it on the Studio version but the crop is not where the guidelines are and they move as if the crawl moved the cropping window with the text. Tried it with scenegroup and Group crawl...

    Marc,

What is the end result you want for the roll/crawl?

Hi, simple...I need to crawl a text on a banner but I have to mask at the beginning of the banner and the end.

The easiest/best way to do that will be with an alpha mask on the Parent Scene of the SceneGroup. You can use a Layer Object to control what objects XPression masks.

Here's what I did...I did a SceneGroup and made it to be a Crawl and in that SceneGroup I did a Quad to make my lower third banner. Then I did two more quads that I filled with a box mask that I uploaded as an image mask. I did a layer object and put everything in with the masks on the bottom of the layer object. The result is the banner being masked when I move the two quads. I know it works then. I retrieved the banner out of the layer object so it would not be masked. I did another Scene that I overlapped in the SceneGroup so it would become a child of the SceneGroup. I did a Text object in that Scene and placed it at the level of the banner in the parent Scene. I switched rendering of the text object to Normal. When I double click the SceneGroup I can see the Crawl in the Virtual Output but the text is not masked by the two mask boxes of in the SceneGroup. Make sense?

Hi Garner, any idea on my last post about the way I did the set-up to be able to mask a crawl. I'm getting no results and I'm running out of options...

    Hi Mark,

is the render order priority for your text set to 'normal' or 'text on top'?

You can download a simple crawl with a mask here:

Hi Garner, sorry for the delay, I do this in between courses... The priority is set to Normal. I tried both ways. The mask itself works fine and does mask the text in the GroupeScene. Obvisously, I can't keep the text there because it won't crawl. I have to test this but is it possible it won't work in Designer with Virtual Outputs but would work on the Studio Version?

Is the text in your child scenes (the scenes that build up the crawl) also set to Normal?

Did you try my test project?

Designer and Studio, Virtual and SDI outputs will all behave the same way.

    Hi Garner,

I opened the project that you sent and it works that way. I noticed you didn't use a Layer object with the Masks. The banner is cut on each side in your version. If I wanted the banner not to be cut on each side do I have to make a second one and place it on top of the masks? Simple, I want the text to come out of the banner where the maks are without cutting the banner on each side. Feasable?

    Thanks

    Hi Mark,

You can download a project that only masks the text and not the banner.

    XPression Project

The parent scene is setup like this:

    - back banner

    - layer object with a duplicate copy of the back banner with feathered left and right mask

The front banner covers the text on the wings and the masks cut through the front banner to show the text scrolling over the back banner.

You could probably simplify this by creating a texture with alpha on the wings.

Let us know if that works for you.

I'd also love to hear if anyone has a better way to do this.

Hi Gilar, you can download the sample project from Garner right above your post or the one from the capture screens talking about the rendering tab. You will see a project to download underneath the capture screens. You will see 2 ways to add a mask to your crawl.

    Good luck
