Is there a way to ignore the keyframes given from a parent group?

Ex. I have a group that contains two layer objects inside, one of which has a mask.
When animating the group's opacity, it causes the mask to fade as well, which ruins what it was masking.

I want to be able to ignore the group's opacity on the mask, without having remake the scene.

I realize that you could achieve a similar effect by "grouping" objects under neath a quad, (keeping some objects in a group). I was wondering if anyone knew a quick and dirty work around, since I have 10 scenes to rework.

Previously before 7, you could keyframe the mask to 1000, and it would ignore the group's opacity. Seems to have broken in 7 however.
