  • 1.  XPression Video Coder - Compression Issues

    Hi all,

We're having trouble finding the right compression settings and codec to render out of Macintosh machines to put into XPression Video Coder. Has anyone had any success with a high compression setting out of Adobe CC on a Macintosh to be used in XPression Video Coder? We just rendered out a 400mb H.264, ran it through XPression Video Coder, and it came out to a nearly 900mb AVI.

    Any input is appreciated!

The XPression codec is higher quality than H.264 and uses I-Frame only compression, so it does not surprise me that the XPVC file is larger than an equivalent H.264 file.

Indeed, so, do you have any input on what the best codec would be to render out of a Mac machine and run through XPression Video Coder that would allow for the smallest file size?

I'm unclear on your question; you want a smaller file size exported out of the Mac, or a smaller file after converting to XPression codec?

It won't make a huge difference what you feed into the Video Coder; the output is always XPression Codec and will be roughly the same size for a given length of clip.. Lowering the quality setting of the video coder will produce a lower file size at the expense of video quality.

Apologies, I want to know the best codec, that plays nicely with the Video Coder (renders in a reasonable time, maybe 30 seconds or less), that I can export out of After Effects on a Mac, that will end up being the smallest XPVC file size with the highest quality?

It doesn't matter what codec you render to they will all produce the same file size in XPVC.

If you want lossless quality, use Quicktime Animation Codec. This will produce large files for things like Video; but smaller files when the image has lots of continuous blocks of color (it's RLE compressed).

If you want high quality and smaller file size without Alpha use Prores 422.

If you need alpha and want high quality use Prores 4444.

If you want smaller files from After Effects (but will still be the same size in XPVC), and don't need alpha you can use MJPEG.

    We too use Animation Codec.

BUT... we set up a windows machine on the AE side to render out the AE project pre XP Video Coder. The WINDOWS rendered animations once encoded in XP Video Coder just play out more reliably than when they come from a mac. Plus the renders on the Windows side are just faster.

    Hope this helps.
