  • 1.  MARCH MADNESS and the dreaded XML file

The Madness has set in here in Salt Lake City. We are using a stats feed in the form of an xml file via ftp. Datalinq saw it yesterday in tests but now it can't see the new file. I can download the file and search around in it but Datalinq can no longer read the file. Is there a better way to link to this file? I am forced to use ftp.

    Hello Mal,

Do you mind clarifying what you mean by datalinq can no longer read it? (do your XPression items not update?)

I'm assuming your workflow is FTP > Automatic download > Datalinq update?

Is the datalinq server set to poll every X seconds?

What is the source of the data (that you are FTP'ing from?) I have seen some site in the past change this to RSS with great success.

Peter, thank you for the response. Workflow was just how you describe it. datalinq server was set to poll ever 5 seconds. the FTP source was our own FTP site that was connected to NCAA stats feed. When I first set up the data fields in xpression using a test xml file I was able to mine the data I wanted. But when the day of the first game came I could not get datalinq to see the data. It's all academic now as the first two rounds are gone and done with. However, the FTP site was left open in the background, and a direct link to the file was entered when I set up the datalinq. I did not automate a download to a specific local location and then connect to the document. This could have been my error. Please feel free to pass on any help as I'm sure this won't be my last.

While its not full proof I have two different ways to do this depending on if its College or High School.

For College I use WinSCP to pull from there live stats providers FTP. I then have a command script set on my ENG computer to refresh and look for changes in the file every 2 seconds. That file is then loaded to a shared folder on my network and I have Datalinq pull from that file. Which polls every 5 seconds or so. It works pretty well for what we do.

For High School we own the computer that StatCrew is installed on so its already on our network. So I use a freeware called FullSync to pull that file from the Network Drive to the Shared Folder in the Control Room. I used FullSync with College, but found WinSCP much more stable for pulling from an FTP.

Little late on this one, but maybe this will help others.
