Masking a Roll - Solved

How do I mask a roll/crawl? I've gone through all of the posts here and have the following:

My mask is at a z-height of 100,
The first scene in the Scenegroup rendering is set to: manual.
The text objects in my next scene in the scene group are set to normal rendering.
The mask functions as a mask if it's in a layer object, but then doesn't "see" the text in the next scene.
When the mask is not in a layer object, it appears as a black box in layout mode and during playback from the sequencer.

I don't have access to any of the demo projects from previous answers. This really needs to be a tutorial in the University because this is frustrating.

    What am I missing? Thanks.

Mainly, you need to position mask above other elements in Z-Pos and "Render Order Priority" the text (Crawl/Roll) as Normal.

    Thanks for the help!

After looking at your project, I set all the rendering on everything back to automatic and added a camera object as my scene didn't have one, and yours did.

It's working, but now I can't figure out how to avoid masking my background, which is in the first scene of the roll and does not animate. (The text rolls over it.) I've tried setting the background's z-height to be higher than the mask, but that's not changing anything.

Any chance you have more help for me?

    This is also possible.
Add a Layer Object with you background and mask the crawl area (quad or bitmap).

Perfect! Can't believe it was that simple. I've been messing with z-position and layer/render order for half an hour.

I think my credit roll is working now, thanks!

Update: Nope. My text is now semi-transparent, like my background is.

I tried setting the background z to -1, so it should behind the text, but that didn't fix it.

I have no idea why that is happening.

Please download again the updated project in the link above.

You have to "compose" the background:
    1. In the Layout Object put the Background and mask crawl/roll area
    2. Put again same background in the same location in the root and use it at the background on crawl/roll area.

    Have FUN!
