How do you kern on Xpression?
I did the training with Ross but I must have missed this one somehow
    Thanks!

Most kerning happens automatically using the kerning tables built into the various fonts (assuming you are using a font with an embedded kerning table). There is a Kerning value in the "Scene Fonts" tab to adjust the overall amount of kerning.

If you want to perform manual kerning, it must be done on an object that is not published to the sequencer. From within layout you can select the textobject and postion the cursor where you want to kern, then use the hotkeys CTRL + PLUS (on the numpad) and CTRL + MINUS (on the numpad) to adjust the kerning between individual letters. Again, note the text object must not be published, or your kerning will be overwritten if the scene is put online from the sequencer.

Similarly to adjust leading between individual lines, there is a "leading" option in the scene fonts tab; and to perform it manually you can select the rows of text in the text object and use CTRL + ALT + PLUS and CTRL + ALT + MINUS (numpad).

Hello. Why must the textobject not be published? I see that it would be overwritten once it is sent to the sequencer. Why is that? I'm dealing with a particular font that does not seem to have a kerning table. There is a letter pair of AY that is so large you can drive a truck between them. So by not publishing, it defeats using a template. I had to create several duplicate scenes that have this notorious letter pair. The font is ITC Avant Garde. Using Xpression V7.

    Thanks

Yeah, kerning can't be used while you are using the sequencer. Maybe you can edit the font in something like Fontographer, to tidy up the kerning pairs

Thanks for your response @infineat. I would still like know why kerning done in Layout gets blown out in the Sequencer if it is a published text field.
I checked out Fontographer like you suggested. Unfortunately, I don't have the cash to buy it (and I don't think my IT team will do it either). So, I looked around for a free version of ITC Avant Garde. I did find one and downloaded it to my Xpression pc. While the particular letter pair looked fine in a Windows document, it did the same thing in Xpression. I couldn't even adjust the overall kerning.
