  • 1.  Can Xpression Designer Find the Dongle Faster?

    Posted 06-14-2017 21:10
When launching Xpression Designer on my desktop computer, the software seems to get stuck on "Initializing: Hardware Protection" (which I assume is the dongle). It hangs on that screen for 30 seconds before taking >5 seconds to load everything else. I know this is minor, but I am the Support Engineer so I am loading Xpression to fix a time sensitive problem. Is there any way to make Xpression Designer find the dongle faster?

The computer is a beefy Dell Precision Tower (Windows 10, Dual Intel Xeon 3.4GHz, 32GB Ram). I have 2 other USB dongles in the computer for Avid Software. Dongles are all connected directly to the computer while I have a USB hub for peripherals (mouse, keyboard, bar code scanner, etc). It is impractical for me to physically connect/disconnect dongles on a regular basis.

I'm running on a mac, Parallels emulator and it sees the dongle instantly. Not bragging, but if mine finds it I see no reason why yours wouldn't.

On Windows boxes here, XPression has no issues finding the Dongle. Program launches quickly and without hangups.

I know this is a local issue. The Xpression Studio and Prime systems both boot very quickly here. It is just my desktop tower with the lagging issue. I was hoping to get some insight from the Ross Staff who browse through the forum.

Only time I've heard of an issue like this it was an HP machine with a built in SD Card reader, disabling the SD card reader in the device manager made the dongle recognizable immediately. I'm sure your issue is different but I would start by unplugging all other devices to see if you can narrow down what is causing the problem. It's not something we've ever had happen here so it is hard for us to identify what could be the cause; especially when running on hardware that we did not supply.

Considering that the dongle works via usb, there may be something wrong with your USB ports.

I'd try different ports. I suspect the problem lies there.

    True!
For HP machines disable internal USB.

BFord mentions the SD Card reader being the issue on HP machines, I've also seen the same issue with Dell machines.
