Is there a way to make the Fast Recall have a longer input window? 

Edit: If anyone else had the same trouble, I found an option in preferences to make it wait for take:

Disable Fast Recall Input Timeout — select this check box to turn off the user entered input timeout for Take IDs in the sequencer.

Also, if anyone else was also confused about this, the asterisk (*) button can be used to "read" a graphic into the preview.

There is not currently a way to change the input timeout for fast recall. You are correct that the "disable fast recall input timeout" is your best alternative at this point in time.

The "Use Asterisk (*) key to play animated preview" option refers to the new feature where the sequencer preview window can now preview take item animations. When selected on a take item, pressing the * key will make the animation run in the preview window - as opposed to pressing the "play" button on the window itself.
