Per Object Masking

I was told that one of the new features of Xpression 4 is per object masking. However I can seem to figure out how that is done. Does anyone know how this is done?

    Thanks

Put a layer object (it act like a group), in it the object to mask and the mask (below). And tadam !

Not sure that I understand that. I tried creating a group and placed a quad with with a mask material in the group with the object I want to mask. Also tried the object to be masked and mask in various sibling and child/parent relationship. However I could not get anything to work. What am I missing?

A layer object, not a group... What is your version of Xpression ?

Oh! Got it now. I thought all objects in the object manager were called layer objects. Very helpful, thank you!

Figured out that XPression mask, is truly a mask, and not an alpha channel. Coming from other systems, that is confusing but true to the definition. However, if I put a Layer Object with two objects (the bottom one as the mask for the top one...) into a GROUP; the entire Layer Object vanishes. Is this a "feature" I don't know how to work? Or is this a bug that needs attention?

This appears to be broken in Version 5.

I tried upgrading to 5 and I scene I had already built previously in ver. 4 doesn't work anymore.

By which I mean I now have the same problem as Patrick where the whole layer disappears.

Try to change the render mode, I know that developpers fix a bug. Maybe this change is the problem you have.

I'm not sure what you mean by changing the "render mode."

I did, however, make a mistake in my description of what happens in ver. 5. If I have a mask in a Layer Object with text (so there's a Layer Object with a text layer, and the mask is the child of the text layer), the mask does nothing. The text is always visible in the scene.

In my case, I have a scene that starts "empty," and a background animation animates on. Then text layer animates from off screen to on screen, and another text layer is in the Layer Object, and the mask is supposed to move up to reveal the text. In ver. 5, however, the text layer is always visible.

Any tutorial on this subject would be greatly appreciated. I know there are 3 ways of dealing with transparency but I don't understand any of them. My teacher thought you need images with alpha but that is not true. Black and white PNG will do.
