  • 1.  Video Coder .AVI to .AVI?

If you have an .AVI file from an outside source, it has to be run through the XP Coder, correct?  I'm working with an .AVI file from After Effects and the Coder isn't reading the file.  Any thoughts?

Avi is just the container, what codec is it? Do you have the codec that it was made in installed on your machine?

    Hi, it's MPEG-4 Video (FMP4).

I ran an .mp4 through Coder with no issues. You can see what codecs are installed on your PC. From Microsoft:

How can I find out which codecs are installed on my PC?
    1. On the Help menu in Windows Media Player, select About Windows Media Player. If you don't see the Help menu, select Organize > Layout > Show menu bar.

    2. In the About Windows Media Player dialog box, select Technical Support Information. Your web browser will open a page that includes a lot of detailed info about the related binary files, codecs, filters, plug-ins, and services installed on your PC. This info should help you troubleshoot problems.

If you can share a dropbox of your clip, I can test on my end as well.

FYI if you have XPression installed on the same machine as After Effects you can select .avi in after effect and select the XPression codec will be an option under that container, skip the need for the extra step through video coder.

Unfortunately AE is on a Mac.  It has a MPEG-4 Video (FMP4) codec out of AE that won't show up in the XP Coder when I try to load the file.

Hey there, I've run into this a couple of times.  The general default from a Mac that I use is  ANIMATION codec (RGB + ALPHA if needed); this will give you a  .mov  file.  Encoder should recognize it though.  "Animation" codec should be installed with After Effects no matter what operating system.

If file size is an issue...  Apple pro-res (another AE default codec) is an option (again RGB + ALPHA if needed).  These are smaller file sizes than Animation codec; but Encoder should recognize these files too.

Encoder should recognize MPEG-4 but when it doesn't I use the above options.

    Hope this helps.

Do you have quicktime installed on your windows machine? Or ffmpeg as an alternate?
