  • 1.  Xpression - Center Concatenated text - different font sizes

    Posted 08-08-2021 15:00
I'm making a stat lower third with stat categories/numbers. The design calls for two different font sizes for the category and number. I've got it set up with {font} and concatenate in Visual logic, which works great - except I don't know how to align the text vertically, instead of it aligning the the bottom. How can I do this? Can I do that while keeping it set up in concatenate? Appreciate any help.

    Amanda,
You might be able to do what you want by modifying the vertical space/leading of the font you need to align vertically.
If that doesn't work, make all your text separate objects and position them with visual logic...working from memory here...value block into x position of first item,  then x position, bounding box width & value into add block feeding x position of next item...and so on.
Having all parts in a group would simplify any animation.
    Hope this helps,
    James.

If you are willing to dive into a little scripting you can use font tags and change fonts via scripting. You can then combine the various elements into a single text object that is subject to scale, spacing. I had a stats bar where we used different colors for stat title and stat data. By combining all elements I could then use squeeze and align to fit them exactly where I wanted them. If you would like a sample, let me know.

    Hi Malcolm,
Thank you for the reply. That would be great if you don't mind sharing a sample! Greatly appreciated.

Let me dig into the old scripts I have. The vertical alignment is going to be a head scratcher but I will see what I can come up with. Actually you could do it in visual logic. Align the first data to the first title by using y position block, but add an offset from the math tab between the title block and the data block. Adjust the data to align with the title. Then, make all stat titles align with your title, and all stats info align with the first stat data.

I just stumbled across this post again. Amanda I am so sorry I didn't respond. Are you still in need of that scripting?

Here is some fancy Visual Logic that will keep everything always aligned perfectly to your Quad. No need for Concatenate blocks here. You can move the Quad anywhere you like, resize it, change the Offset values in VLogic2, use any font(s) you want for any object, and it should always stay aligned so that all text is centered in the Quad both horizontally and vertically. Just need to make sure all your text objects are Left Aligned (Tabs and Options>Tab 1>Alignment column dropdown>Left), and their Pivot X values are set to minimum (By default, these should already be set, but if not, then right-click on the Text Object in Object Manager>Pivot>X-axis>Min. Do this AFTER setting Text Alignment).

VLogic1 covers Vertical Alignment and VLogic2 covers Horizontal Alignment.

If you need to animate it, you can put everything in a group and animate the group.

So I found this while I was looking for something else.  An interesting way to handle this.  One question though - do you have a method to control the text autosqueeze?  So maybe for example each text element can vary but the totality would be constrained - perhaps by the width of the base quad?

The simplest way to do this would be to concatenate multiple text boxes into a single box and then that one can be treated as any other single text box.

Someone may have a smarter way but this is certainly the easiest.
