Dashboard Newby (no xml file for custom panel)

Just now dipping into dashboard panel design. I am following the tutorial at xpression U. I cannot locate the .xml file associated with my custom panel. Is the tutorial so old that the system doesn't write an .xml file? Thanks in advance.

    Hi There,

Typically, the information created in the XML file is now stored directly in the DashBoard file.
You CAN specify it to use a seperate file, but, generally that is not done.

Yes, BTW, we do need to update the training guides, there have been many new features and enhancements since those were done.

If you want to create a new panel that uses an XML data source, select "External XML Data Source Panel" as the template when creating a new Custom Panel.

Troy, thank you very much for the info. I have linked the tutorial text datalinq to the panel I have saved and the only time I can get it to update via datalinq is to save the .grid each time. Moving forward. Thanks

If you are looking to use DataLinq for your panel parameters, you are better off using the "DashBoard DataLinq" source in XPression and enabling parameter streaming inside of DashBoard.

@jamespeltzer. Thanks James, making an external xml source does the trick. I'm making much better progress now that it actually works. Thank you.

The external XML will work for you but it is considered the 'old way' of doing things. The advantage of the streaming mechanism is that is actually updates XPression faster and does not need to be on the same computer as the DataLinq server.

    Good luck!

    To Echo James.

I'd *highly* recommend using the streaming mechanism instead of the XML file version.

It should be pretty quick and easy to change your panel over to it.

Totally up to you, but, it is significantly better than sharing the data through the XML file method.

Excellent info folks. We have training next month and I would like to at least know what they are talking about. Thanks as usual.

@jamespeltzer Where can I find the panel inside of dashboard to enable streaming? There is so little documentation. I've downloaded and printed the Development guide but it would be nice to have project to work along.

    Thanks

James, thank you for the link. Now I can start enjoying dashboard. I do in game CG design for an NBA team and this is going to make our operator much calmer on game nights.
