  • 1.  Send RS232 command with DashBoard?

    Hello there!

Gotta say thanks for the awesome support so far. Still havent met a single thing DashBoard could not do (yes, the big endian thingy also worked, though still not finished with that project)!

So, this time... Our sports arena is about to recieve a bunch of Samsung QM65 displays for commercial use etc... However, it would be great to be able to send the main big screen production to these as well during games! Now, I could just use the software that is inluded with Samsung of course. However, that is too easy and booring! I wanna do this as well through DashBoard!

That and the ability to create custom layouts that most people can use without much training is beyond helpfull.
You can read more about the Samsung displays and the RS232 functionality they have here

    Website: http://displaysolutions.samsung.com/digital-signage/detail/1009/QM65F
(The manual is also there for better description, though the link is javascript...)

Now I would really love to be able to control these through IP and RJ45, and not through RS232 connectors...
Just an idea I'd love to throw out there. Would be awesome if it would work!

I've been looking into UDP and TCP commands to a Samsung TV as well, but from what I can see Samsung are rather restrictive letting people play with the TVs/monitors and remote controlling them. I have found a way to emulate key presses on a remote through Python etc, though I would love to just be able to write a small function in DashBoard and use that to control the TVs over network.

Glad you're having so much success exploring what DashBoard's Custom Panels can do!

When it comes to RS232, DashBoard requires an RS232 to TCP or UDP converter box. We use these frequently to control our Pivot PTZ cameras and numerous other devices. We typically use Moxa or Comtrol DeviceMaster converters.

There are also 3rd-party software applications that would take your PC's serial connection and expose it over TCP or UDP (I don't have any specific examples I can point you to on this one).

Hope that points you in the right direction.

You can also get devices like an IP to IR box from Global Cache (https://www.globalcache.com/products/itach/ip2ir-pspecs/) that are POE and connect directly to the screen to emulate a remote/IR interface. They also make a wifi version. Then you can just make web calls to it from Dashboard. We have a few screens here that we do that with. It's nice because they work with any brand of screen but the control software remains the same.

@jamespeltzer That would be great I suppose! Though I cant find a ethernet (UDP/TCP) to RS232 adapter? I can only find the other way around, or do these work both ways?
Being able to control everything through DashBoard will just remove the clutter of extra software etc to use... And would be just great! The less I have to teach other operators the better.

@josephadams That would work I suppose. Though I have bad experience with IR being to "broad" and can interfere with other equipment around it simply becuase there is no specific device it can point to, and other brands might react differently to what would turn a Samsung on/off.

According to the manual, it has an IR port (looks like a headphone jack). No blaster needed. If you use the IP to IR device and pull a cable straight to the screen, you shouldn't have any interference to worry about.
