Is there a way to send out commands to control lighting systems? The thought is to create a button in Dashboard with a GPI trigger that would be triggered by our Carbonite swithcer that would be able to Black out our Arena lights. I am guessing this can be done GPI, and it depends on the lighting system. If anyone has done this, I would be curious what system, and how it works.

You're right that it definitely depends on the lighting system. I know many people have created Custom Panels that recall different presets on lighting systems (including doing things like blacking-out arena lights). In many cases, they can be controlled by sending a GPI trigger or some other fairly simple ASCII command.

I am currently doing this, but through QLAB with DashBoard as my, well, dashboard instead of QLAB...

    • I am running DashBoard and Xpression on a PC.
    • QLAB on a MAC (this houses video and audio as well)
    • MA DOT2 PC on a third PC (first universe is free, 512 DMX adresses)
The flow goes like this: [LIST=1]
  • DashBoard send a UDP command to QLAB. (DashBoard also sets crosspoint on a Carbonite Switcher and performs a cut there, though that is not important in this setup).
  • QLAB recieves the UDP command, and plays the appropriate cue. Starts a video/audio that plays out to the crowd. But it also send a Midi Show Control (MSC) over RTP MIDI to the DOT2 PC Lighting Software.
  • The lighting software will then react either to midi notes (if you would rather use that) or jump to a specific cue based on the MSC over network.
  • And sends the DMX output through an ethernet to DMX adapter (EntTec) over network through ArtNet-protocol.
You can find the different software here:

    MA DOT2 PC: https://www.ma-dot2.com/en/

    Have fun!

    Hi All,

I just wanted to share a link with you about some lighting work that we integrated into DashBoard along with our XPression Graphics for a recent project with our sports solutions team:

I'm told that the DashBoard panel is used to send triggers to the lighting console to trigger the effects.

I am circling back on this now as we are getting out new lighting system in the next few months...

What I have been told is that the ETC Control system can accept UDP Strings, however that system is going to live on its own network completely isolated from everything else. My plan is to put a "LightControl" PC running Linux with Dashboard installed near the controller with two network cards.

My hope is that I can send a GPI to trigger to a button on the LightControl PC and that button will then send out a UDP string on the Lighting network. Can anyone confirm if this is possible?

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for posing on the forum.

From the information I have gathered, yes, this is certainly possible using DashBoard.

If you require further details about how to go about setting this up when the time comes, please feel free to send out a message.

    - Daniyal.
