I'd like to modify the View Control panel. Is there a way to copy the existing view control panel so that I can make some edits?

There are several ways to do this. The easiest one involves the following:
1. Create a new blank Custom Panel.
2. Open ViewControl in one window and the Custom Panel in another window.
3. Put ViewControl into "Edit Mode" (CTRL + G) and drag the entire UI into your Custom Panel (start your drag on the gap between the custom control buttons on and the output displays to get the bottom layer)
