  • 1.  Testing / Verifying DASHBoard output

    Posted 06-22-2019 16:48

Is there any technque for testing the output of DASH Board? The group I work with has the only copy of XPression locked down on a laptop in the truck.

I would like to know if anything I develop is actually going to impact on our XPression. Unfortunately I am a trial & error guy and need some feedback like that .

    Thanks

    Hi Whit.

What type of output are you trying to send to XPression? RossTalk? DataLinq? DashBoard XPression plug-in?

Depending on what you're trying to do, the advice will differ.

    Cheers.

    Hi James

    Thank you for replying.

Full disclosure: I am trying to modify Peter Kaptein's hockey scoreboard panel. I am working on two different versions

    • to control a vMix hockey package (and I am happy with my progress there, slow but sure)
    • second version ( his original with modifications) to link to XPression

The issue (most pressing I guess)

The only copy of XPression is in the truck on a locked down laptop, ie virtually no access right now. I hope to attend one of the Ross "Freelance" Xpression workshops this summer, in the meantime, I have no way of knowing/verifying that what I am doing (or what Peter did) actually synchs with XPression, while working/playing here at home..

    • I want to add live data from a few APIs (JSON formatted) to populate some of the graphics.
    • I also want to use the data from LiveXML from a Sportzcast scorebot to populate my scorebug

Can either of these two data sources be brought into DASHBoard or must they be configured using DataLinq directly to XPression ?

    That's my whining for now.

Okay, looks like I avoided your question, you were kind enough to ask, I don't see any RossTalk commands in his panels, just ogscript. I am thinking this means XPression reads the DASHBoard via DataLinq.

While I have your ear, would you say DASHBoard could be labelled a convenient GUI for XPression ?

    Thanks

    Whit

    Hi Whit.

If you already have an XPression license, you should be able to install the DataLinq server on your dev machine even without having the rest of XPression Studio running. You can then point your panel at your test DataLinq server and browse the data being supplied by your panel to verify its accuracy.

DashBoard is definitely a convenient GUI for XPression - it is our recommended way to customize your workflow and get the most out of the software. With the XPression plug-in, it provides great remote access to the information in your sequencer as well.

    Whole new vista!

Of course the XPression license belongs to the company (YourTV Brockville). I am doing this freelance/volunteer.

Do you have any idea how I could go about getting the dataLinq server for use here on my development workstation. Is it part of the XPression install package or a separate entity. That I could make a copy of from the laptop, and use the company licence # for an install or ....

I am thinking if I get to attend the Ross Workshop for ftreelancers and hoping I walk away, not only with some real knowledge, but with a dongle with a "Dumbed - down" version of XPression, I can test and continue to develop.

    Thanks

Is DASHBoard a very convenient replacment for the role that Bannister Lake previously played ?

    Hi James

You were right, I see in the video  (that Chris uploaded to Vimeo) he mentions Ross Talk for some of the data going to XPression. I also saw where he was giving credit to you for some of the segments of the package. Great.

And at one point in the video he turns on the XPression Virtual Output. I am guessing that is what I was originally asking about. Somewhere where I could see the graphics being played out. I guess I would require XPression running to have/see that.

You did mention that If I had DataLinq server running I could see the connections (But I guess not the graphics output).

    Thanks

    Hi Whit.

For help obtaining/installing/configuring, I would recommend making a post in the XPression forum - they can go over things and get you sorted out.

    Cheers.

    To answer your second question:

Yes, to see the output in any way, you would still need XPression - no way around that as it needs to do the rendering. What I was talking about with DataLinq was simply a way to verify that the correct data was being made-available to the graphics templates.

Thank you James, you have been most helpful.

And just now I was looking a creating the roster tables and see your explanation of how to get my rosters into DASHBoard.. Hoping later to be able to do this with an API (JSON formatted). But that is another day.

    Thanks again
