Hi again Whit!
I was kinda boggled about this one a while as well, and you made me want to look into this one again...
I finally got it working in Designer at least.
Not sure if you need something special license or what not to make this happen in a live production environment, but yeah, I'm hoping someone from ROSS could chime in on that and shed some light here?
Anyways, when I was looking at this I did basically the same thing you're doing. However I wanted it as a preview, and not necessarily as an output. Wich is what you get if you dont do something more than what it just says above.
Step 1: Create a desktop preview widget in DashBoard, and set a channel, I just stayed with 1 as that is default.
Step 2: In Xpression, do as it says, go into Hardware Setup and add an "Xpression Desktop Preview Client" as the output.
Set the "host" to whatever machine is running your DashBoard, if it's the same machine, just leave it as "localhost".
Leave channel to "Channel 1" (assuming you stuck with that on DashBoard as well).
Now you have an extra framebuffer in your outputs. If you go to the Sequencer, and set the framebuffer to the correct framebuffer and that it online, it should show up in the Xpression widget in DashBoard. So, that confirms you got a connection between the two at least.
But, if you're like me, and you want to use DashBoard as the preview for what's to come, you need a bit more.
Step 3: Head back into Xpression and Hardware Setup. This time, head to the tab called "Preview & Monitor", and you'll see a few options.
If you now go to the "Up Next Preview Output" and set that dropdown to "Desktop Preview Client". You can now try to move the focus in the sequencer up and down, and you should see a preview in your DashBoard Xpression Widget.
This works if you simply want to see what's next, or what the focus is on. However, you might have more than one frambuffer, at this point, you set the "Up Next Preview Output" back to <none>, and go to the table below.
Find the frambuffer you wish to see in DashBoard, then click on the field to the right called "Assigned Preview Output" and set that to "Desktop Preview Client". This way you can see the preview on different framebuffers etc, provided you set up more of them in DashBoard with more preview channels.
Havent tried yet, but I believe this should work with clips server and loaded videos there as well
Hope this helps!
