  • 1.  Carbonite Chroma Key - Matte Fill

    Posted 07-15-2014 03:05
    Hi

I should start by saying I'm loving the Carbonite+ 2M setup in the few months we've had it up and running. Alas, one feature we had on our old SD GV Kayak was the ability to apply a matte fill within a chroma key. One of our workshops involved a similar effect to the Apple Ipod advertisement, using 1 camera with green screen for the key and a Final Cut timeline for the colored backgrounds.

So far haven't been able to find a way of doing this on the Carbonite, the matte BG appears to only apply to auto-key / luma not chroma.

Any tips would be muchly appreciated!

    Thanks

    Simon

    Simon Hi,

You cannot build a chroma key over a background outside of an ME unless you use a MiniME to do it. Using a MiniME to do this is easy, simply select the CK in key2 and then use the MiniME as an upstream source.

That would be the best way to achieve your goal and leave the ME resources untouched.

    Thanks for the response Nigel.

I'm still struggling to achieve this effect.

I'll give it another go this week, otherwise we're receiving some training soon from our dealer and I'll flag it with them to hopefully show us how!

I'll let you know how we go.

    Thanks

    Hi Simon,

Are you wanting a completely black silhouette, like an inverse matte of a chroma key? Or do you want something that will allow gradients, more like an x-ray effect? I've worked out both ways, but the full inverse requires two MiniMEs.

    James.

EDIT: It's more of a negative or holographic effect, rather than an x-ray. That method only needs 1 MiniME.

Here's the procedure to create the full silhouette effect:

    [LIST=1]
  • 1. On MiniME 1, set key 2 to Chroma key, with the camera as your source, then turn on key 2 on MiniME 1
  • 2. On MiniME 2, set key 2 to Auto select key, with MiniME 1 as the source, then turn on key 2 on MiniME 2
  • 3. Set the key to inverted by pressing NEXT, and turning the knob under Invert on the panel
  • 4. Set MiniME 2's program bus row to BG, and turn the saturation to 0%, and the luminosity to 100% (hue doesn't matter, we just want white for the key matte)
  • 5. Set clip and gain as necessary to get a good matte. I used clip at 18.8% and gain at 17%
  • 6. Now, you need to select a black source that you want to use with the matte you just created on MiniME 2. You can do a split key on BK or MiniME 3 (if BK is selected as a source on that). On the main ME that you want to use this effect on, set Key 1 source to your black source (whether you use BK or MiniME 3), then hold down Auto Select and then press MiniME 2's button in the source row. Press the knob under Alpha. Now turn that key on.
  • 7. Put whatever coloured source you want on the program bus (I just used BG, which is independent of the one in MiniME 2).

  • To do the holographic effect, in step 6, set MiniME 1 as the alpha for the black source (that's the one that only uses one MiniME).

    I hope this helps.

EDIT: Revised to use a split key.

Just an update on this: I've thought of a more efficient way of doing this, that only uses one MiniME. I'm pretty sure it would work. When I get time, I'll give it a go and let you know, if you're interested.

    James.

Hi James, thanks for this, I'll give it a try and let you know how I go. Not too fussed if it uses all the resources, thanks.
