I am troubleshooting a problem with a piece of gear connected to the output of my MDX switcher.

Looking at the output on my Tektronix scope I noticed the scope said the switcher output switched between 8 and 10 bit depending on the crosspoint selected.

Black reads as 8 bit. My cameras are 10. Color backgrounds are 8 or 10. And doing a slow dissolve to black the output switches back and forth between 8 and 10.

Is this changing normal? Is my scope correct in its readings?

All SDI outputs are a full 10 bit 4:2:2 YCbCr signal.

My guess as to whats happening is that the scope is trying to 'guess' (detect) whether it's 8 or 10 bits depending on whether or not it see's any pixels in the image that use more than 8 bits.
