  • 1.  RAVE Tally output behavior is strange

We have tried to connect the Tally port on RAVE Audio Breakout Box to the Camera CCU (Sony, Panasonic, Ikegami) for triggering the tally cue light of the camera. But there are strange behaviors on multi camera cue light.

We found that it only needs to connect one wire to the camera tally port, then we can trigger the tally light on and off when pressing crosspoint button. If we connect both tally and common pins to the +/- pin of the CCU tally port. The tally light is not working normally.

From our understanding, the tally port on Switcher side should be only a contact closure circuit. It should have to connect both tally and common pin to the camera side for a complete circuit. But in practical, we only need to connect one pin from RAVE tally port to CCU tally port, then the tally light can be triggered.

Is there something different between our understanding and the RAVE Tally out?

    Hi Tony,

Sorry for the delay on this -- seems I did not properly subscribe to the Graphite section of the site -- DOH!!!

This sounds like your connected to the GPIO and not to the Tally port. We definitely tested these and they do work like Tally in other carbonite switchers. I am not going to be in the Office again for a few weeks but will do my best to look at this again when I get back.

    Hi Les,

we are surely connect the port with "Tally" labeled. it should not be GPIO, unless there is wrong labeling on the RAVE unit. Moreover, we haven't configure the GPIO setting on the Graphite, and when we press the crosspoint buttons, it there is reaction on the 25-pin Tally port.

Also, we have tested the Tally output with multimeter, it is a contact closure from the Tally port without voltage level. But if it is contact closure, why one wire connection can light up the cue light on the camera CCU? We have tested there is same behavior on Sony, Panasonic and Hitachi camera.

    So strange.

That Light on the CCU will light up because it is supplying the Voltage and then the Rave is closing the Circuit. So it is doing exactly what it is supposed to do and does not generate the Power that is being done by the CCU.

Perhaps you have a grounding issue? For what it is worth, I just put in a Graphite with RAVE expansion and I'm tallying Sony cameras just fine. About to do two more with Hitachi cameras. I'll let you know if I run into any issues.
