Hi all,
I installed version 12 on our Carbonite yesterday and found a couple of interesting changes in my testing. This will be especially important to those who followed my advice in a thread from a couple of years ago about doing a "preset black" transition using the Carbonite's hidden FTB command (see attached link).
A bit of history: in Carbonite software prior to version 12, the Fade to Black command overlaid a black layer on top of program output, above Key 4, with a cross dissolve. All on air lights on the panel would flash to indicate that the switcher was in FTB mode. Sending the command again would fade that black layer out and stop the on air lights from flashing. It didn't turn off any keyers, as it was above them, nor did affect the program and preset rows in any of the MEs.
This functionality was really handy for performing a fade to black without having to double-press "BKGD" in the next transition area and black on preset before doing an auto trans. It was also good in that it didn't affect the keyers or the selections in program and preset. It also made the "missing" dip to black transition easy to implement using a custom control, as per the attached link (the only thing is that the transition would only work on the ME that you set it up for).
Come version 12, this has changed. There is now a built-in dip to black! What's more, this dip to black is a normal transition, so any keyers that you want can stay on screen during the transition (I had to make another custom that uses black in preset to get around that issue, which is now no longer needed). It also works on all MEs!
This built-in dip to black is actually the new "White Flash" transition, using black as the matte colour. To set it up, follow the instructions on page 26 of the Operation Manual, making sure that you load the colour black in step 9. Note that this transition feels faster than a normal dissolve, because it basically performs two transitions in one, within the same time as a normal dissolve (however long you set it for). So I recommend using a longer transition time for it.
Setting up such a transition every time you want to use it can be quite tedious, so just record all the steps into a custom control, remembering to add an extra step to change the dissolve type back to a normal one at the end.
Now, to Fade to Black. With version 12, the Fade to black has changed significantly. While a fade to black can still be set up as a custom using the technique in the attached link, it no longer acts as a layer above program output. Instead, it now does a double-press on "BKGD", selects black on preset, and then does a dissolve auto trans. Instead of going to the trouble of logging in via telnet and sending a RossTalk command to the Carbonite, you can record those steps instead into a custom control.
I hope this is helpful information.
James.
