  • 1.  Carbonite Networking with Multiple Computers (one of which is on multiple networks)

Here's what my current network setup looks like:

Carbonite Plus (NIC 1) - Static IP 192.168.0.123, Subnet 255.255.0.0 connected directly to

    Workstation w/ Xpression Designer (NIC 1) - Static IP 192.168.0.xx, Subnet 255.255.0.0

The Workstation also has a Wi-Fi USB adapter for internet access. (Not 100%, but I believe this is set to DHCP, where it has a Subnet 255.255.255.0). You might not know it from this post, but getting that to work was also a challenge, as all my networking knowledge is recently self-taught from the internet!

The Rosslinq and Dashboard Panel connectivity work well, and the internet connection is mostly reliable when I'm not in the maintenance closet where my workstation stores (drops out all the time, but I'm guessing it's not a networking issue). The Workstation needs to be connected to the internet, as I need to feed Xpression with Datalinq data that is stored in the cloud (StatCrew XML) which I believe I can do with an RSS feed Datalinq pointing to the XML's web location set to JSON.

Here's what I'd like to do. I want to have my Workstation remain privately networked to the Carbonite for Rosslinq graphics + publicly to campus internet network for Datalinq data, but I'd like to control the Carbonite via the Dashboard control panel from a different computer privately networked to the Carbonite so my TD and Graphics Operator don't have to share a mouse and keyboard. They'll be in the same place, so a direct connection isn't a problem (although controlling it remotely over the internet would be cool).

I've tried directly connecting the other computer (a MacBook with Static IP 192.168.0.xxx, Subnet 255.255.0.0) to the Carbonite's NIC 2 set to Static IP 192.168.0.123 (same), as well as 192.168.0.yyy (different), all on Subnet 255.255.0.0 to no avail. I spent hours trying different configurations and couldn't get it to work. My latest research has me thinking I need to have the Carbonite's NIC 2 on yet a 3rd subnet (1 for Xpression private network, 1 for Xpression internet, and 1 for Dashboard MacBook private network).

What is the best way to do this? Do I need a router? A CarboNET? A Dashboard Proxy Server? Obviously, the less I spend, the quicker I'll have my hardware control panel :) Thanks!

If you don't have a network switch or router, set the NIC 2 on the Carbonite to 192.168.1.123 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Set the MBP wired network IP address to 192.168.1.124 (or any other number between 2 and 254 that isn't 123. Connect the two directly with a cable.

If you can get a cheap home router that can run a DHCP server, you can connect all three devices to that router and have it assign IP addresses to all three. Or you can get a switch and run a DHCP server on either computer if you want.

    Hope that helps!
