  • 1.  Embed Tally information on SDI PGM

Could it be possible to embed Tally signal info into the SDI PGM stream (METADATA) though Carbonite? This could be used to send tally information into the BlackMagic Design Camera Convertors through the BlackMagic Studio Convertor. BlackMagic does this to get their Tally information over fiber. They have the Metadata info published.

    Future feature set?

    Thanks.

    Hi Brandon,

There is no plan to implement this kind of feature. There is no SMPTE spec on this and as such no industry standard. This is a proprietary method for BMD that is not implemented by any other manufacturer of cameras.

We will add this to the request list and if more people ask us for it then it will move up the list like all other feature requests.

Five ... this would help ease the transition for folks like us who are moving up from Blackmagic switchers to Ross units.

Personally, I'd prefer this as an external box that takes serial tally or GPI. Signals going in and out of the Carbonite and routing around our facility should be as standard as possible. If need arises to deviate from the standard, I'd prefer to only do it for the segment of signal that it is absolutely necessary for. Perhaps a mini converter or Open Gear card that connects to the network to get tallies and with some dashboard programing could also send ccu type commands. The SDI signal would pass through one of these encoders just before going to the camera. Just a thought...

This is good news... how do we begin? Is there something we can do now?

No -- this requires development work for something that is not a "standard" protocol established by SMPTE or other Governing body. Further it is not implemented by anyone other than BlackMagic. They built a "broadcast" camera that does not have a way to tally it using "standards" already set and adhered to by the industry. It is on a long list of features that have been requested. We set that list accordingly and try to implement what we can within each release.

This is not on any short term roadmap. It is not likely to be seen for quite some time.

Thanks Les. Appreciate the reply. I know Newtek has implemented this non stadard Blackmagic protocol as well as another switcher company. Appreciate the Ross products...!
