  • 1.  Should we power off?

We run a Carbonite MM at our house of worship which is mainly on Sundays and then 2 or 3 times during the week. Should we keep the frame running 24/7 or switch it off when not in use?
The biggest issue is that the PCs connected to it loses its second monitor feed if the Carbonite isn't switched on, and it causes problems with syncing and have to be set up every time.
    Any input will be appreciated

IMO you should turn off the Carbonite, at least from time to time, after all it is a PC platform. Sounds like you have a monitor issue, if not a PC issue.

Have you flipped the monitors --- Monitor 1 to Monitor 2 and vis versa? If so, does the loss of the monitor feed stay with the new monitor 2 or does it follow monitor 1. If it follows the monitor then it is probably a monitor issue, If it stays with the new monitor 2, could be a cable or the monitor output from the PC problem.

Gordon I think he is referring to the PCs that are connected to the Carbonite MM will not have the Second Display (Carbonite HDMI inputs) if the switcher is not up and running when they go to use them. So yes this is an issue that would be the same as if you did not have a second PC monitor connected to the computer when you boot it up.

Now not to get into an argument -- however Carbonite is not a PC platform. It is an embedded system that runs a Linux operating system for the CPU/Instruction processing. However all of the video processing is performed in the FPGAs. This is a switcher that is designed for 24/7 operation and it should be able to be left on.

However one could always go to the -- but if your only using it that much do you waste the power???? That costs money......

Thank you very much for your input and I think I got exactly what I needed to hear. I come from a PC background, my PC is on 24/7 and if it wasn't for that MS company that forces restarts, my PC would be on year in and out. The Carbonite is built to high standards, so it should be fine then to leave it running.

To clarify the monitor issue... The PC 2nd monitor goes into the Carbonite as a video feed. If the Carbonite is off, the PC/Mac doesn't pick up that there is a second monitor and then disables it. When the Carbonite comes on, those feeds show up as blue unsynchronized feeds and we have to manually set up the 2nd screen again, or unplug / replug the hdmi cables. It would have been handy if Windows and Mac had an option of always saving the 2nd display optio s even when it is not connected.

But leaving the Carbonite on will solve all this.

    Thanks!

Further anecdotal evidence, we've had no issues with leaving a Carbonite running continuously apart from firmware updates and the like for years.

Worlds of difference in stability between a dedicated custom Linux build and the most reliable Windows machine. Part of why I avoid PC reliant switchers like the plague.
