    Dear Sir,

Sorry for my stupid question since I'm the beginner of Carbonite switcher.

We have two sets Carbonite switcher working fine in V9.10, need to be upgraded latest version (including DashBoard) to enjoy the new features of it.

Have backup everything into a "Set" file included those files -> 1.customcontrols 2.installation 3.mems 4. personality,

Searching through the Forum, find some unsuccessfully topics about the upgrade, some says it stuck on waiting the USB thumb drive, some says it failed on the upgrade & wait for tech support.

Is it safe to upgrade, because obtained limited information on the upgrade procedures like:

    a) Place the file "upgrade-11.1.2.13444.carbonite" into a USB thumb drive
    b) That USB thumb drive need to be format in FAT32, and at least have 2GB memories space.
    c) Do the "Force" software installation by pressing the upgrade switch inside the frame, wait the upgrade LED light up 5 seconds.

Hope can have your suggestion to prevent the accident happen!

    regards with thanks,

    Jackie

So there was 1 topic and all of this information comes from that one topic.

Yes it is safe. The issues that can arise may result in the requirement for performing a forced upgrade which is what the steps above are for. Easiest way to do the upgrade is to take a new or old USB that you don't need anything on -- Format it clean to FAT32 and place the .carbonite upgrade file in the root of the USB. Now on the panel go to the Reset menu and press NEXT a few times until you get to "Upgrade from USB". Now you can click on the knob and then scroll the file list -- should only be the upgrade since we just formatted the drive :)

Now you perform the upgrade. Wait a while as it has to back up a lot to the USB -- again if your using a SLOW MEMORY DRIVE (does not matter that it says USB 2 or USB 3 if the MEMORY on the unit has slow write speeds this takes time!) then after it has backed up this data it will do the upgrade. Also note -- Some USB Drives do not "boot" well. So in some cases the waiting to upgrade is because the USB is not detected on boot. If you use a USB with an LED it is easy to see that it is working as when the UPGRADE starts the light flashes from access. Also there is a UPGRADE YELLOW LED inside the frame.

If you are still having concerns please contact our tech support -- it is free. They will assist you and walk you through the upgrade if the instructions that are part of the Upgrade download are not clear.

    Morning Les,

Is it mean if upgrade from the Menu -> Reset -> "Upgrade from USB", it will backup all the file, then do the software upgrade later?

It is something different form the "Force upgrade" -> press the upgrade switch inside the Frame, then power on the frame unit.

If I do the "Force upgrade", is it mean need to do the backup first? Because Force upgrade not include the backup files into USB thumb drive, right?

    Thanks for your information sharing!

No either one will do the "backup" -- there are files from 10 to 11 that the system needs to backup and then restore. This is why you require the extra space on the USB.

If the Force UPG is done and you have a USB that does not boot and mount it might seem like it never upgrades as it never mounted the drive and was able to read and then write to it.

    Dear Les,

Understand the software upgrade will not do the customer file backup, just backup its system file so need the extra 2GB memory on the USB thumb drive.

But don't understand the "Force Upgrade" is done, the USB thumb drive does not boot and mount ... is it mean need to ensure the USB thumb drive is recognized by the switcher system first, then it will do the software upgrade. If so, can you tell me how to ensure the USB thumb drive is recognized?

    Thanks for your teaching.

    regards from Jackie
