I need to create an animation that looks like the words are "typing" on. All I can figure out is positioning, rotation, alpha, etc. Is there a way to do this?

Currently there is no type on function that can easily be applied. You could create a separate character and keyframe the alpha, but depending on the length of the text field, this could take some time.

The only way to do an actual 'type on'-effect at the moment is doing it through the API (i.e. by writing some software).

However, if the production team realy, realy wants this effect you could create a 'type on'-effect-like animation by covering each line of text by a rectangular mask and animate the masks one by one from left to right revealing the text line by line.

Obviously this is not a real 'type on'-effect, but if you do the animation fast enough most viewers won't see the difference.

I can suggest to use masking. This way you have to separate your text objects and background in different scenes, with masks been looking like quads and animated above your text lines - one by one. Moreover, the mask can be a bit gradient in its left ending, not solid.

Even if your text is dynamic and may have unpredictable amount of lines, you always know the maximum amount of lines and exact height of a single line and the distance between.

Actually, if you use the 'old' masking method (i.e. not load a mask, but create it in a material) you can have your backgrounds in the same scene as the text. For this you need to play around with the materialsettings for the mask and the rendersettings of the scene.
