• 1.  ReEntering to use a shot clock and building a show

Just throwing this out there, in case others need to do the same. Hopefully with the new update coming out all of this will be easier. If you know of an easier way - please let me know.

I have not been able to figure out a way to get the switcher to RE-ENTER back into MLE1 using the MLE1PVW or MLE1PGM outputs the switcher supplies (which makes since as signals go). I make AUX 3 MLE1 PVW, AUX 4 MLE1 PGM. I then have those AUXs come out of the back of the switcher and hard wired back into two different switcher inputs. (Hence, ReEntering)

    AUX Assignments:

    AUX1 - Camera Return 1

    AUX2 - Camera Return 2

    AUX3 - MLE1PVW

    AUX4 - MLE1PGM

AUX5 - Media Player(s) audio output delegation to AJA for audio use.

AUX6 - MLE2PVW (Game Camera with embedded clock)

    AUX7 - Future Use

    AUX8 - Future Use

Since I cut the shows mainly with EMEMs and use the media players 1/3 for transitions and media players 2/4 for the ESPN replay watermark, I build my custom controls to flip flop different sources on MLE2. (wished there was a source hold ability in the custom controls), if there is I have not found it.

With any sport with a clock you may need to give a little more umph, beef it up, make it readable, change the color of the clock(s), cut out / position the clock(s) and possibly changing the background color of the clock(s) in the score bug, and have a clock over the game camera. Here is how I do it for ESPN basketball but applies to all sports with clocks (TD nightmares):

On MLE1 Key 1 - I invert self key the clock camera over white. (HINT- DEFOCUS the camera a little bit to make the dots of the scoreboard being shot blend together - makes it easier to see). This is for basketball - so one camera is able to shoot the game and shot clock at the same time. In doing this, I can make the clock(s) display 100% white luminance. I apply a mask to get rid of all the anomalies and leave only the clocks showing. Should give you nice white digits. I make this my MLE1PVW.

Next, I make MLE1 Key 2 source the reentered (MLE1PVW) AUX3 signal. MLE1 Key 3 source the reentered (MLE1PGM) AUX4 signal. MLE1 Key 4 is the score bug. MLE1 keyer priority is: Key 1 / Key 2 / Key 3 / Key 4 - Making Key 1 the key source on the top and Key 4 the bottom most priority. Key 1 is a self key (see above), Key 2 is a self key, Key 3 is a DVE and Key 4 is Auto Select. MLE 1 PGM is Background (RED) - since this is for an ESPN shot clock I am referring to. Key 1 is OFF - Key 2, 3, and 4 are all ON. Tag all keys and background (keeps pvw state correct for the reentering). Position Key 3 as the shot clock display in the bug.

MLE2 is the work horse: EMEM=MACRO ---- I am an old GrassValley TD.

MLE2PVW is Camera 1 (Game Camera), MLE2Key1(state is off) is CG1, MLE2Key2 (state is off) is CG2, MLE2Key3 (state is on) is a SPLIT KEY (MLE1PGM (what the switcher outputs normally and the holdout matte is the bug key signal), MLE2Key4 DVE (state is off - positioned lower left or right to be used as clock over camera 1) AUX3 (the reentered MLE1PVW signal - see above). I tag Background, Key 3 and Key 4 together. I save EMEM 1 to 9 Bank 0 with this configuration with the same camera on MLE2PGM as the EMEM number. Bank 1 is the same as Bank 0 however Key 1 is ON and Key 3 is OFF. Bank 2 is the same as Bank 0 however Key 2 is ON and Key 3 is OFF.

Lastly, I build my transition and replay move custom controls to load and run the transitions, turn on / off Key 4. Change Key 2 to be Media players 2/4 at 50% opacity and turn it on / off, when I need the watermark. Tag background and Key 2. Pause for a determined duration. Enter either cut or set a trans rate based on the transition then apply the trans dialogue. Select just background and make the MLE trans rate 10 frames (in case of multiple looks at the replay). The replay out custom control does everything just backwards in the custom control including returning Key 2 to CG2 at 100% visibility and the clock over the game camera.

    HAPPY SWITCHING :)

    Nice write up Gordon.

I will say so much easier when you have XPression doing the ESPN score bug with Datalinq directly to the Score Controller :). But when you don't have it it's got to be done some how!!

Are you using the Memory Attributes with your Emems? If so you can select which buses "recall" or don't with those memories. So that when you make recalls it will "hold" the bus.

Ahhh man I guess I breezed through the manual to quickly. I will re-read that section and give it a go Friday when I am on that switcher again.

On another note --- is the "MEDIA" able to be ON TOP (priority) of all keys?

    Hi Gordon,

Media Follows the layering of the transition area -- just like a wipe would.

Some of the segments are probably pretty basic, but there is a section on Memory attributes in there.
