  • 1.  Configure Carbonite GPO trigger to Cue and Play clips

    Posted 04-10-2019 10:54

    Dear all,

I intend to use Carbonite's GPO Trigger to Cue and Play clips on Video Server. When user select a source on Preview Bus, Carbonite will trigger an GPO output to control Cueing, and when user bring the source to OnAir, Carbonite will trigger another GPO output to control Playing.

Example:  When user click button Input_1 then GPO1 will trigger (cueing), and then user pull the lever to bring it to OnAir, GPO2 will trigger (playing).

I tried to config many times, but the results was not as I expected.

Could anyone help me to solve this? Thank you very much

Hi. I don't think you can set up GPO for preview, only when switching to program. You're probably better off assigning a Custom Control to trigger your cue GPO and get your operators to press that before they transition to the server.

    Thank James Hope,

You saved me a lot of time. I just have known that GPO only trigger when a source transition to OnAir.

I think it is easy to make a mistake when let the operators do more work, so I intend to listen click events on Preview bus and Program bus then control Cueing/Playing. Do you know which protocol that the Carbonite uses to populate events?

    Thank you

Really you only have GPO for that. The Carbonite Dashboard panels can receive events from the Carbonite using PanelLink, but I'm not sure how you can use that to trigger things (maybe someone from Ross can help explain that?).

There's a protocol for sending commands TO the Carbonite called RossTalk. You could try building Dashboard panels with buttons that allowed you to send the appropriate commands to the Carbonite simultaneously with commands to the servers, though it may make things more complicated for your operators.

To me, your best solution is to set up a Custom Control for each server. They'd have the following steps:

    1. Cue the server
    2. Put it on the preview bus

Then, the operators can just continue as normal with the fader bar. So it's still only one button press for cueing and putting it in preview.

    Dear James Hope,

    Thank you for your enthusiasm.

RossTalk is DO-ONLY protocol, it does not reply any value.

With Opengear Dashboard, when Dashboard is running, I could see the switcher generate a event in HTML element format on TCP port 5253 whenever a button clicked, but it does not generate event anymore if Dashboard closed, so I don't know how to use it.

Could you explain more details on your idea? How to set up a Custom Control like that?. I seemed misunderstand your solution.

    Hi,

Yes, RossTalk is only for sending commands to the Carbonite, as I said, and not receiving.

You can create panels in Dashboard. I recommend looking at the Dashboard U videos as well as Carbonite U videos.

To set up the custom control (aka macro), you can use Dashboard, or you can record the process using the Carbonite panel. As I stated in my previous post, you'll need to have the following steps (in more detail here):

    1. Cue the server (i.e. trigger the GPO that tells the server to cue the clip)
    2. Select the server on the preview bus

That's all that your custom control will need to do. Then your operators can press the appropriate custom control button and then continue as normal with using the fader bar.

To learn how to create custom controls using the panel, see this Carbonite U video. Otherwise, have a look at the Custom Controls Dashboard panel and go to the Editor tab.
