Switcher not seeing USB drive

I've been trying to load some still .png images onto my Carbonite Black 2s. It seems like the switcher isn't even seeing the Thumb drive. I've formatted the drive fat32 and ntfs but neither seems to be working. Does the formatting matter? As far as the stills go I just have the files in the root directory of the usb drive. There are no other folders. I've looked through the manual and other online forums and I have not had any luck finding this information. I'm scratching my head here. This doesn't seem like it should be this hard.

Hi Michael! Are you trying to use the USB port on the Carbonite panel? If that's the case, you'd be out of luck, as that USB currently is inactive (you can get power, but no data).

Do you have a USB drive in the switcher frame? It acts kinda like a hard drive for the switcher. You can add your stills to that, and it they should appear in the Media Store.

Thanks Nate! I had no idea that I needed to use the frame usb to accomplish bringing stills into the mediastores. I did not see that bit of info. in any of the documentation.

One more question. Is there anyway to take the stills off my thumb drive and copy them to the internal hard drive so I don't have to leave the USB drive in the frame?

No, unfortunately there will always have to be a USB drive plugged into the frame with your stills. Many facilities will buy a USB drive and treat it like part of the switcher, leaving it plugged in at all times.

Hey Michael, once you've got a USB drive in the frame you can FTP into it to update stills and manage the names of your switcher sets which saves having to get the USB drive from the frame.. (I use either file explorer or Filezilla).

I have had multiple occurrences of USB thumb drives in Carbonite Ultras suddenly, being read only.  I tried reformatting on another computer, but the drive can't be reformatted.  Is this a known problem, or is there a known fix?

Did you have Log to USB running on them? That could accelerate the life span of the Flash Memory as it would be constantly writing to them.

We do have logging enabled.  The drive can be read on other computers, but now the Carbonite does not recognize it.  We will try another drive.

If the Drive can not be written too only read then it sounds like the USB flash controller has locked it .. probably due to no longer having the available error blocks.  Unless you are having issues that you need to track with Tech Support I would turn off the Logging until you run into something that needs to have this turned back on.  That will reduce the number of write cycles tremendously..

Can I hijack and ask what the logging to usb does ? Is it like the EDL ?

    Hi Simon,

Logging to USB is different from EDL. This logging is for diagnostic purpose. By default, it logs to RAM, which means it gets lost after the frame is powered down or rebooted. To save and extract the logs, there is an option to copy the logs from RAM to a USB drive. Or to log directly to a USB drive.

EDL saves the sequence of switches made with respect to time. This is to aid in post production.

Also the EDL does not save to Flash or USB until after you complete it and save ... It also is just held in RAM until that point so only a single "write" is made one time when you complete the EDL file.
