  • 1.  PGM as a DVE Key in MiniME - Aspect?

    Posted 08-11-2019 20:54

So... My problem is both linked to the Graphite, and also to Xpression Tessera, and is based in a stadium with an LED Media Cube and LED banners around the arena.

What I have is the Graphite 1ME 9IN 6OUT (2 unique), and I have Xpression Graphite SCE with Tessera SE.

The media cube consists of 4 sides of 12 panels wide and 7 panels high, each panel being 128x128px.
    That gives one side the total pixel value of (128 x 12 = 1536 & 128 x 7 = 896) 1536 x 896.
Within that canvas I have to fit the main screen output, graphics for the corners (rounded corners), and the game clock. That should pose no problem.
Around the arena I also have a few LED screens. These are a bit different in size, but generally their pixel height is 208, while their width ranges from 1872, to 512.

So, I want to use Xpression to overlay graphics on both the main output and the corners/panels around the arena. Hence why I got my hands on Tessera.
In order to do this, I took PGM and put it as a DVE Key 1 in MiniME1 and scaled it down, then I put the Xpression channel as the Key2 on the MiniME1, so far so good. Now to calculate it all and position it in Tessera.
Can also mention that the Graphite is in 1080i50 mode (Europe broadcast standard).

So, in order for me to map out all the LED banners etc, I have to make room for them in Tessera. I have to use two "heights" of these banners at the bottom of the output to fit it all to the LED prosessor. So, two rows of 208 = 416.
If I take the 1080 height of the output, and remove the bottom two lines, that gives me a height of 664 left.
Of the total height of 896, this basically leaves me with an ideal height (232) on the media cube to fit the game clock.

So, to get the width of the main screen (for Tessera mapping), I'd take (664 / 9) * 16 = 1180.4 Rounded down to 1180. So my PGM DVE Key would be a total of 1180 x 664, and then I could fit the corner, and I could fit the PGM and all LED boards on one single 1920x1080 output. Perfect!

So, here goes, I go into Tessera mapping, and create an output of 1180 x 664, create a graphic that is just simply green with 50% transparency, and lay it on top so that I canmove the DVE key og PGM to the same size and fit it perfectly.
However here's the kicker! When using the DVE key with PGM, it turns out that when I get it to the correct scale (height) and try to position it so that is has the same X-position as the graphic from Tessera, wich i KNOW 100% is 1180x664 (16:9), it turns out that the PGM DVE key is wider?!?! I tripple check the aspect, and I'm sure it is set to the value of 50... So, what do I trust? The Xpression output that I can manually set each pixel width on? Or the DVE Key in the mixer? If I create the graphic in Xpression to then match the DVE key, I have to set it at 1230 x 664, and this is not 16:9...

What do I trust? The XPression graphic overlay that I can set to specific pixel width? Or the DVE key with an aspect value of 50?
Dunno if this made any sense, but basically, one of them are off... It's either the DVE key with PGM, or the key containing Xpression (also set to 1080i50).

Or is Aspect 50 the same as 0,5 or 1/2, meaning the output is basically half the height of it's width?

I feel I know XPression pretty good, but keying in a Carbonite-like switcher is where I might fall short.

I just setup a Graphite in version 2.2 running at 1080i50.

I took a scene and built a Quad with your size of 1180x664 made a green material.

Keyed that on Channel 1 of XPression in Graphite Key 1 over a Red BKGD (the BG source default)

I use Key 2 to key colour bars (used a clip of bars in Clip player 1 of XPression)

I then set Key 2 as DVE key and set the size to 61.5 and they seem to match...if i set the position off by .1 or -.1 then I see a line of green on one side or the other....

This might have to do with how your Tessera Region mapper is being applied and thus your object is actually coming out smaller as your output might be smaller than the 1920x1080 raster....

When we do system designs for Tessera we show the led pixels counts and then how the channels map to the regions..etc...This helps give a visual to how all of the video is being used.  You might need to draw this all out and then post it so that it can be easier to visualize what you are doing to help with the region map as well...
